Power Steering

I wondering if anyone would be willing to elaborate on successful power steering solutions for the C303? I have read on this forum, in Europe there has been some success with Chevy van steering boxes, but no details were mentioned. Any feedback on this topic would be most appreciated, thanks...

Mine was fitted with a Saginaw system by the previous owner. Works well.
I can take some pics if needed.

After 102 views, only 2 responses? Is there a better way to ask the forum about power steering? Thanks

I haven't checked back with them but Unisteer was suppost to have had a higher GVW rated unit by the end of last Summer. Electric,no plumbing and no pulleys. My plan is to research this for possible Volvo and/or Pinz application. This is the way car makers are going.

Looks like they have an improved version available - the original kit was 3000 lb vehicle max - the new one is 4500 lb max -

"This kit features a 30% stronger motor that will reduce effort in vehicles with steering wheels weighing in up to 4500lbs. The new computer modules are now in a sealed weather resistant box and can withstand very harsh conditions."

http://www.unisteer.com/search_by_produ ... steer.html

Price is still $995 USD

Might be a good option to consider...

I have sent off a letter with some pics/info to a company called Nexteer which does a lot of the parts and engineering for many of the electrical power steering units used in production vehicles and some of the aftermarket units like the latest unisteer and "I-did-it" hotrod kits. Apparently they also supply a lot of the EPS units for heavy duty commercial trucks so I contacted them to see if they had any kind of a system which would work in the C303. I sent them pages from the manual showing the steering assembly for reference as well. If they have something I can use I will be getting it when I get to the point where I will be able to install it during the restoration.

Here is the the page I looked from their site: http://www.nexteer.com/technology/steer ... -steering/

I have yet to hear back from them, but if/when I do I will definitely post the info on here.

Lately I have seen two successful approaches on adding power steering to the C30X series in the forum at http://www.terrangbil.net/forum/

The first option is to use the steering box from a Mercedes Geländewagen/G-wagon. This is almost a bolt on-solution:

Read/look here: http://www.terrangbil.net/forum/index.p ... a-tgb1111/

If you don't understand Swedish, Google Translate will do an OK job translating the thread here: http://translate.google.com/translate?s ... tgb1111%2F

The second option is to build a "sweet steering valve" which also requires only minor changes to the car: http://www.terrangbil.net/forum/index.p ... t-tgb1113/

Again, English translation is available through Google Translate: http://translate.google.com/translate?h ... tgb1113%2F

I have installed on my TGB1111 electric steering from Opel corsa C, (100$ used) contoll unit I have imported from here: http://www.bodylogicuk.com/90265/info.php?p=8.

Current problem is to supply with sufficient electrical power - 40-50A, I have installed 2 converters from 24DC to 12DC, each has 23A, but seems to be that they are not enough or are not designed to work connected parallel.

I will put some photos later. Car is in garage.

Irakli - I have a Corsa unit that I want to fit to my TGB1314. Please post some pics / info showing your installation, it would be very helpful for me. Regarding the power problem, have you considered using a 12v battery as a buffer for the high current draw? Presumably the 40-50A draw is only peak.

Can anybody provide any updates on progress sourcing an appropriate new power steering system? Or can we hear from any of the guys who have successfully added a power steering system borrowed from another vehicle ?

Have a look at chosenview's blog, he has put a link to it from one of his posts. He is going the gwagen route as seen on terringbil. IMO this is the best option and I will be doing this on my Volvo also. I have this G steering box in my pinz and find it to be a really nice box with a ratio is perfect for these vehicles being a lot lower (less turns) than the original units.

Some Volvo 164's had PS so a pump and bracket could be sourced from these vehicles as they use the B30 as well...possibly a simple solution for those who want PS while keeping the engine stock. There is info at terringbil about this and IIRC the bracket does need to be slightly modified so the pump clears the chassis rail.
