I don't MEAN to be stupid, but ...

OK. I KNOW what the gear ratio's are in the portal axles. I KNOW what the gear ratio's are for the C303 & C306 four speed tranny are.

WHAT I DON'T KNOW is the tranny gear ratio's are from the four speed out of the 164 automobile OR what the gear ratio's are from the three speed (?) automatic are.

So, were the four speed gear ratio's the same on the Volvo C300 series as they were on the automobile?

I was guess not, but hey, what do I know.

I've heard from a couple of sources of modifying the ENGINE with 164 automobile engine parts, including cams, fuel injection system, etc. I have NOT heard what the four speed gear ratios are? Or the automatic?

Does ANYONE out there know?? Thx in advance.

I am not sure about the ratios but I do know that the tranny is a ZF? the same transmission as the Pinzgauer. I am not sure if the gears are the same. This Website has a complete repair manual that is very helpful http://www.freewebtown.com/adventures/index1.htm best of luck! Cole

Gear ratios in the car transmissions are:

M410 5 speed manual (4 + O/D)
1st - 3.50:1
2nd - 2.12:1
3rd - 1.34:1
4th - 1:1
O/D - 0.797:1
reverse - 3.54:1

Borg Warner Auto matic Trans:
1st - 2.39:
2nd - 1.45:1
3rd - 1:1

Torque ratio in converter 2:1 - 1:1

Hope that helps

LP,

THANKS very much. I was glad to see that info.

Now for the BIG question. Will the M410 fit in a C303 or a C306?

Thanks again. Your tech knowledge is VERY helpful. I've been wrenching on my rides for thirty years (has it really been that long - man I'm gettin old) and have stopped working on V8's with automatics.

I hurt my back six or seven years ago while working on one of my trucks. It took me about six or eight weeks to get better. My wife put her foot down and told me 'no more'. She is truly just looking out for my health, which I DO take for granted sometimes.

I still wrench on my Harley. Rebuilt the upper end last year. But now I'm gonna sell it and my 91 Suburban so I can buy a C306. IF the wife gives me the green light.

Course, I recently talked her into a new car for herself at the end of last year, as from a financial standpoint it made more sense than dropping another four grand into her 96 Subie that would have been worth two thou AFTER the engine rebuild. So maybe she will cut me just a little slack. She does love her 05 Subie.

We go for a test ride this Saturday. I'll keep you guys informed.

Thanks again Lightningpinz.

Test Drive GREAT IDEA

Post by Lightningpinz »

We go for a test ride this Saturday. I'll keep you guys informed. BEST idea yet.. This truck may or may not be for you. Volvos have their strenghs and weaknesses. If it is a fit Great, if not the keep looking.

Now for the BIG question. Will the M410 fit in a C303 or a C306? Haven't tried yet. But the C303/c304 tranny and tcase is a brick. Both are one unit. With an automobile tranny, you will have to add a seperate tcase with a shaft between, or use a generic trans/tcase combo and adapt (lotta work.

I hurt my back six or seven years ago while working on one of my trucks. It took me about six or eight weeks to get better. My wife put her foot down and told me 'no more'. She is truly just looking out for my health, which I DO take for granted sometimes. I have gotten as lucky as you. I have met a beautiful young lady who treats me the same. Any more it doesn't matter what I own al long as she is by my side. ( Keep her, play with things like Volvo's Harleys etc)

Maybe some day we can go 4 wheeling. Linda, (the lady who I sometimes take for granted cuz she is so good to me) is always looking for more people (Guys and LADYS) to enjoy the hills. Show me what you get after ya got it. If you don't get it and wanna go in a Pinz we will take you and Peggy for a picnic/easy 4 wheel trip or a moderate trip. notice no difficult as Linda kinda walks on those. (She lets me have my adrenaline fix, but she is smarter than that herself)

I kind of figured that the automobile O/D tranny would be a problem. However, could the guts be used in the C300 series case?

You guys are the greatest. Sharing all this knowledge and being so nice to all us newbies.

THANKS TO EVERYONE.

I will let you folks know IF I get the green light from my wife.
