I'm not particularly impatient, in fact I think I've been very patient. The frustration is that they missed the first boat because they forgot about me. I waited and waited without bugging anyone and then finally called asking for an update and the first two people in the office didn't know anything about it. Then they scrambled and couldn't make it to the boat in time. Ok, fine, I work overseas so it didn't matter that much, knowing I'd make the 2nd boat.

The 2nd boat they made fine and Wallenus gave them an arrival date which was just wrong. I don't blame horizon for that, but I very clearly explained that this was my first shipment and I would like information and the answer was no problem. I've given up on even getting a simple introductory email explaining the process. This may sound dumb, but them not even telling me that customs usually takes at least two days... her response was that was common sense... ok, sure, if you've been doing this for years. How hard is it to have a simple introductory email that explains things like that...

Ah well, getting mad won't make the boat move any faster.

Pictures to follow next week when it arrives and is released.

I'm bringing the good camera, so high res pics it will be.

The agents said it's cleared customs and she will call the steamship line tomorrow to make sure it has a release at the terminal. Worst case it takes till Wednesday, but hopefully tomorrow it will be ready and I can either drive it down Tuesday or Wednesday.

Success!

Pictures to follow tomorrow or Thursday. The truck was released yesterday and today I got the word it was ready for pickup. It all happened pretty late in the day so I was glad I had prepped already for the pickup. Of course I forgot to take any pictures when I actually picked it up... oh well.

Drove down to the port, GPS sent us the wrong way once down there, called the office, clarified, got there, had to hire an escort (50 bucks cash only just to drive me in the gate and sit in his car and watch me). Got the teamsters to take me to the truck. The ship didn't disconnect the batteries so they were dead. Jumped it, started right away, needed choke but normal start. Drove it no problem to my local mechanic (my uncle's mechanic).

The truck has more rust that there was on the pictures, doesn't look like it will be a problem, just some elbow grease needed. The fuel gauge didn't work and I think the turn signal lights and brake lights weren't looking. I'll know more later.

All in all the pickup was fine, driving it put a smile on my face and lots to do once I get it home.

Rust never shows in pictures or is it that we are too excited and don't see it (probably a combination of the 2)!

Thank you Kevin and Shawn.

Picked up the truck today at the shop. Initially none of the lights were working, the blackout light switch was engaged. Quick fix there. All the fluids were changed and the truck started right up!

I started driving south along I5 and at my first fuel stop discovered a lot of fluid leaking from my right front wheel! It wasn't brake fluid, those were full. It wasn't from the hub itself, it was from the CV boot leaking. A trip to auto zone and pulled off the bolt to check and yup, no fluid that I could feel. Filled it up and then drove about 20 minutes, checked again, now the oil is warm and pissing out over my hand. Ok, drove another half hour, same thing. No more leaking from the wheel either.

I drove it the rest of the way back home. Truck drove fantastic. It tracked straight, the steering wheel was responsive and didn't have much play. It pulls to the right when you break hard. Fair amount of squealing at first. The engine is quiet! I only put on my hearing protection once the semis started to pass me on a regular basis. The truck clearly likes to run at 60 more than 50, it was smooth and no issues at all from the drivers seat. The temps stayed right at 90c unless I was going up a hill where it would hit 100c.

Higher res pictures to follow.

The truck does have a swedish manual, a spare with rim (that I can't figure out how to attach) and two sets of road triangles. It's also got some mounts up front that I don't know what they are for.. one's clearly for a rifle, not sure about the other.

Tomorrow I go to the DMV.

You can see here how much surface rust there is. None of it (so far) seems to be anything other than on the immediate surface but it's spread all over. Undercarriage looks great.

So you are allowed to drive unregistered vehicles over there or did you get some sort of permit?

I got a trip permit from Washington State, no problem, was easy to get. It's good for three days. I believe you can get up to three for the same vehicle on a year?

Registration was a snap. Went in with all my paperwork. Had the chassis number inspected and getting a specialty plate. 177 total and I won't need to DEQ. And with that I close this thread and start another, see part II, restoration and exploration. CUrrently have the 45 day temporary tag until the plates come in the mail.

i finally got around to picking up my truck from the pier after 5 weeks of sitting. i was not safe to drive, as the brakes were not fuctoning properly - leaking wheel cylinders. i decided to have it shipped on a flatbed from long beach, ca. to san diego.
