Where is my alternator?

Post by Garrycol »

I have been looking at a lot of pics of Haffy engines and can see the alternator hanging off the side being driven from the extra crank pulley.

Attached are pics of my engine - can someone tell me where I will find the alternator - soory if this is a noobie question - still learning.

Thanks

Thing off to the side is the engine governor not the 'alt'
Hafi's have a Dynastarter that is the starter and the 'alternator'
Take off fan hood and look behind the fan

It's called a dyno starter. Works as a starter motor and switches to a generator when it's running. That is why there are 2 belts on it. For the extra torque to spin the engine.

Thanks to both of you for your prompt replies - I have admired Haffies for a long time and k new of their basic layout and specs but not the detail. So you will have to bear with me for a little while longer with questions that show my lack of knowledge until I get my head around things.

Never considered that was the governor. I knew mine did not have one as the tacho I have on the dash has already shown 5500rpm momentarily.

So that leads to another basic question.

Should I refit the governor - what was the reason for its installation in the first place - for example the governor in my Landrover 101 is a spring mechanism in the distributor rotor and cuts the ignition (and can cause a huge backfire) - it was designed to stop troops revving the guts out of the V8 but in reality the V8 does need a governor and mine doesn't. With the Haffie was it designed to actually save the engine from over revving or more to limit speed on the road - I have only had mine up to 40kph and I need to get up my courage a bit more before I go faster.

Also does the ignition just cut the ignition with the risk of backfire or does it just maintain max revs.

If I choose not to reinstall a governor should I use the governed rev limit as the redline or is there another number I should use. I am not a person who like to hoon around and rev engines but I have noticed that it would easily be possible in 1st gear.

Thanks for you input.

The governor is a butterfly in the intake manifold that restricts intake flow to "slow it down".

A set of Hafi manuals is a must - they along with the parts book will be required if you are going to learn and work on yours.
Not sure who sells them down under but there are many sources: UK, Austria and Scott at Expedition Imports
Cheers and welcome to the forum. Your truck looks very nice.

Thanks for that advice - I have a a repair manual from 1963 and am not clued up enough at this stage to understand what is and what is not relevant to my 73. I assume that most is the same with the exception of the gearbox and bits of the engine.

Cheers
