(Alternate answer is "the one stupid socket Mike can't find in his toolboxes.")

Repair manual says M18 - but I think that is the shaft size, not the Nut, - It's half past 11 and it's dark and cold out there - I'll tell you in the morning (8 or 9 hours time) if you haven't found out before then!

It's definitely not M18.. More like M24-28.

Obviously some conversion from an Imperial or AF size that went wrong!!! :D :D

I see if i can find my other steering columns and see if they have nuts on them to measure.

Do they even make a 27mm socket? The nut on Lurch was not on very tight but the wheel itself is on splines which i think are tapered so could be very tight to get moving. I used a suitably sized bearing puller to remove the wheel when it didn't move after the first couple of taps from a dead blow hammer.

You could always use a box spanner as that could be "made to fit".

Naa.. I now have new 26/27/28mm 1/2 sockets..

Nut off, soaked in PB Blaster penetrant for 2 hrs, nut back on for 4 turns, wiggled till it popped up on the spring.

Well done, You had it nice and easy - I don't think that part of Lurch has been apart since he was built in 1973.

Might have to do a bit of "restoration" on Lurch's steering wheel soon as the shiny black surface has worn away to show the black inner stuff. When it's damp your hand come away black!
