How do you remove the fan from the dynastarter? Anyone have a spare?

Post by audiocontr »

Lost a blade on the fan today. Not sure how, just suddenly made a weird noise and visual inspection showed a single blade now outside of the fan housing. I tore it off. You'ld not believe how one missing blade causes the whole vehicle to rattle.

I see swiss army has spare fans. How do i remove it from the starter?

(I'll also order a new fan soon. let me know if you have a spare and are looking to part with it)

The simple answer is with some difficulty...

Actually, if you have suitable tools, it shouldn't be too bad to remove. It is basically just pushed on to the shaft which is a taper with a Key way so Undo the nut whilst the Dynastart is still on the Haflinger as that will hold it nice and steady whilst you put an 8mm rod in the hole and unwind the nut.
Take off the split pulley wheels and shims and make a note of how many shims in total you have on the Dynastart. A new fan might need a different number in between but will still use all the shims.
Now you can disconnect all the electrical cables.
Now undo the two clamps holding the Dyanstart in place.
Remove the Dynastart from the Haflinger.

I had to change the fan / Dynastart on mine in the middle of nowhere and luckily found two railway sleepers, suspend the Dynastart between the two supports. now put some PlusGas / penetrating oil on the shaft. As I was just transferring the fan to another Dynastart it wasn't an issue at the time but had to restore the thread and shaft once I got home.

Anyway, to get back t taking the fan off, some heat on the fan boss should make it come apart nicely.

If you have access to a hydraulic press, that would work to push the shaft through the fan boss..

When you put it back together, put the dynastart back on the engine, making sure the pin on the engine block lines up with the hole in the bottom of the fan shroud.

Use the correct number of shims between the two split pulley's and put the rest under the nut. lock the fan and do up the nut - it's tight. I don't remember the torque setting but it needs to be tight!

We do have two of the more common red seven blade fans. We also have a black nine blade fan.
Send me a private note if interested in discussing this in more detail.

Well...when the dynastart is on the engine you turn it so that the hole in the fan sits on 11 hours....then put a drivers or other round (8 mm ) piece in the hole , you can feel when turning when it lockes. ....now you can lose the nut that holds the fan on the dynastart. Note that there are ALWAYS six spacers between the pullys of different thickness to tighten the v belts.
