Advertising for these type of tyres often indicates they are suitable for ATV/UTV and may have a low load rating. Look for UTV specific tyres as the gross weight of a modern UTV is similar to a haflinger as is their unloaded weight.

Also, a full size UTV has similar performance to a basic Haflinger so the speed rating will be OK. However I found that quality load and speed rated UTV tyres can cost more than mud tyres Eg Maxxis 14" MT tyres.

Unlike here is Aust where no ATV/UTV tyres are road legal, you can get DOT approved ATV/UTV tyres in North America - I believe Black Diamond make ATV/UTV tyres that are DOT approved and have the relevant load and speed ratings - some tread patterns are closer to MT rather than ATV/UTV styles are so more suitable for onroad as well as off road use.

Good luck

I think part of the low load rating is the low inflation pressures they are rated at - 7 psi. I am getting these for off road only use - so I'll give them a try. Will be interesting to see how they do. Can always try a bit higher pressure too.

The DOT approved UTV tires are an option but many have low ratings as well for the 12 inch narrow versions. Also are expensive.

Lots of UTV are using wide 14 inch rims... hard to find in a 4x98 pattern (although the alfa etc alloys are around in that size).

In Europe /UK there are 13 inch retread "grass" and "gravel" rally tires available at good prices - but with shipping it's too expensive for here in the states.

The ATV tyres I have fitted are made by Artrax (Mud Trax) and are 6 ply radial - I normally have them about 12-15 psi and have had no issues (even when the Haf has been fully loaded with logs); I can't find info on their actual load rating. They have a good bead rim protector profile.

I have used them on the road at speeds up to 35mph - however they are quite noisy and you can feel the vibration through the drivetrain - fine for off-road though.

I have 14" Fiat alloys on my Haffie - Lancia and Alfa also have wheels of the right stud pattern. Maxxis make 185 and 195 R 14 mud tyres that fit these rims.

I looked at the Maxxis MT tires and don't see any sizes on their site appropriate for a Haflinger (i.e. 24 inch diameter or so). Maybe they don't offer anything in that size in the USA?

Hmmm - I did a search for Maxxis MT 753 Bravo 185r14c site:us on US sites and also came up with a blank but there are plenty of hits on the Aussie site. The 185 wide version on a 14" rim fits on a Haflinger no issues.

This is out of the Maxxix Brochure

The Maxxix MT - 754 Buckshot Mudder is available in the US but it is 27x8.5R14 but I think this might be just a bit too big in diameter for a Haffie.

There is lots of discussion on tyres over on TheHaflinger.com so it might be worth having a look there.

Just looking for narrow street legal tires for slushy PNW snow and mud. Would love to use the 135-15 Michelin X M+S tires but finding some rims that work seems impossible - unless I go to 4x100 and make up some "offset" washers or something like wobble bolts but nuts. Could use compact spare tire rims perhaps - as they need to be narrow - ideally 3.5 inch wide - but many have too much of an offset inward it seems...

Here is a UK dealer who offers the michelins for $117.50 delivery included to the USA:

Another favorite is the Vredestein Snow+ tires - 155R15's are available new:

I have a full set of these on a Citroen Mehari and are great in the snow and ice for a non-studded tire.

There is a ebay offer for 145-14's right now as well:

But these also need a narrow rim - ideally 4 inch.

Any suggestions?

There are super narrow 15" x 3.5" alloy rims made for use on the back of drag racing honda civics which could work except they are 4x100

I bought the Dmack dmg1 165/80r13 G42 (mounted on 13" fiat steelies) viewtopic.php?p=72230#p72230

Others have more recently bought the same but the 185/70r13
Not sure if that's helpful or not for what your looking for?

Well - The Dmack tires seem to be unavailable in 13 inch sizes here in the USA right now and for the foreseeable future I am told.

Checked on the DOT approved UTV tires and the smallest diameter I could find were 23 inch diameter with on a 300 lb load rating and a maximum pressure rating of 7 PSI! This is the Black Diamond ATR model.

There are the Black Diamond XTR tires in a 25 inch diameter x 8 inch width for a 12 inch rim with a 600 LBS rating at 7PSI and max pressure of 18 PSI - but that is a taller tire than I was hoping for... also still concerned about such a wide tire on such a narrow rim.

Thinking about having a set of the 15 inch fiat steel wheels narrowed to allow use with the 155-15 Vredestein Snow+ tires.

Do you keep the tube? I tried to mount without and the bead won't catch. Anyone have advice on how to catch a bead with these rims?
