Tyres Again - 12" tyres in Australia

Post by Garrycol »

Question mainly for Australian owners.

My Haflinger has 14" rims on it at the moment with Hankook 185R14 M+S tyres - absolutely crap offroad but Ok on the road. Later I will put Maxxix muddies on these.

However my question relates to the original 12" rims which I do want to retyre. They have the original Sempirit tyres on them but they are no longer roadworthy. So what full on legal offroad tyres are Aussies putting on their 12" rims and where are you getting them from.

I did find carlisle atv tyres that are 80kph rated but these are 25"x8x12" so too wide for the standard rims. I could get the rims widened but don't want too.

So where do I get 12" tyres in Australia.

Thanks

Bummer :(

So I guess it is Maxxis Muddies on the 14s for everyday use and longer offroad and tractor tyres for the 12s for the mud holes.

In the 70's, the big thing was to fit 13" Fiat rims (124 or 128 rims with modified offset) then fit 13" Rally Tyres.
You had to modify the offset because the tyre hit the spring if you used anything but a very narrow rim/tyre.

Back in those days 13" tyres were common (Dunlop's, Yokohamas etc as used on the 1600 and 180B Datsun rally cars etc) and the tyres were quite aggressive.....nowdays rally tyres are much less "blocky" as I understand the theory is rubber on the ground is better than air (inbetween the blocks).

Today, I guess your best option would be to try and find an aggressive 13" mud and snow tyre.

Thanks for the good information.

I have just been through all this with my Landrover 101 where tyres for it were getting too hard to find so went purpose made rims - an expensive exercise.

Seeing this is not as an easy exercise that I thought this aspect will go on hold with the priority the car registered. Rust, front hub oil leak and reroute the exhaust to go out the back and not the side as it currently is.

Garry - are your 14" rims steel or alloy and are your 185's 75 or 80R14?
Also - if you want original tires for the 12" rims they can be found here: http://www.puch500.at/?action=reifen (scroll to bottom of the page)
May be expensive but they are available!

Thanks for that - the rims are alloy but the 185R14 tyres do not have any markings to indicate their aspect ratio - looking at the tyres they look to be 70 or 75 ratio - I will get the tape measure to work it out.

I did find a couple of European sites that had those tyres - I assume the price is in Euros. Actually for Aust the price is not too bad - cheaper than Maxxis ATV tyres and maxxis 14" mud tyres.

The killer is always shipping.

Cheers
