Rosie the rover

Post by Heyitsmike »

Hey guys! New to the forum. I may not have a mog, pinzgauer or Laplander at the moment, but I did pick up this beast over the summer off a gentleman in Connecticuit. It's a land rover 101 forward control. It's an ex English military "air portable" gun tractor, and I've been slowly restoring it this summer

I have more pics in the link too!

While it doesn't have front and rear diff locks, or portal axles, it does have the land rover 3.5 v8, range rover 4 speed w/ overdrive "all wheel drive", and pto driven "nokken" winch. I also have the original canvas top for it that I'll be replacing the custom hard top with.

Hopefully it will look something like this when completed...

Yes, Welcome. I love the 101s and as I recall that V8 motor that the Brits use comes from the old Buick 215ci design. I really like those trucks and please keep us posted on getting her back into shape.

That it is! Same motor with a different intake. I actually used a Buick HEI distributor to replace the points and condenser and all that in my rover. It was a good $500 less expensive than the rover counterpart too.

I'll be sure to keep you guys updated!

Welcome to the 101 club - they are a great vehicle.

I have diff locks fitted to mine and while portals provide under diff clearances on vehicles such as the Pinz and Haflinger they do come a the expense of stability in extreme conditions. Overall the Pinz and difflocked 101s have similar capabilities but in different areas - the 101 is far more stable, has more power and a slightly higher cruising speed on the highway - also the technology is a bit simpler and easier to repair. The Pinz has softer springing and better under diff clearance but the engine is a bit asthmatic.

I have been 4wding in my 101 with both Pinz and HumVees and all vehicles are impressive in their own ways with their own strenghths and weaknesses.

I see yours does have the Noken winch fitted and this is a great piece of kit - allowing you to winch forward or back as required. I have used mine quite a lot bit mainly pulling out trees on my house block. I have used it in anger a few times to pull out myself and recover another 101 up some sand dunes.

The 3.5 engine is a great engine but is lacking in a bit of pulling power so I have just taken mine off the road to put a Land Rover 4.6 engine in. Here is a little vid of my 101 on the dyno last week getting some before power readings prior to the engine change - my vehicle is a 24v version so produces a little less power than the 12v version but the dyno showed up the lack of torque as it would only go the 3500rpm but on the road over 5000rpm but did show that with quite a few kms under its belt power is down just a little.

They are a great vehicle - enjoy

Nice ride!
If I may ask, what did you use for lockers? From what I can tell both Detroit and arb both discontinued their "salisbury 101" line. I've been able to track down a gentleman in Utah who has some remaining Detroit lockers, but I recon it would be a bit of a pain for the front axle when on the road, therefor a selectable option I would assume would be best. Would you happen to know where to get some "spares" perhaps?

I have a detroit in the rear - a very easy installation (you cannot put them in the front as the 101 is constant all wheel drive) and I have a sals ARB in the front. Because of the larger axles in a 101 over other Landies, the ARB side gears are too small for the axles so you either have to get new side gears made (a local 101 supplier made up some on receipt of a bulk order) or you get the axle hole in the arb side gears enlarged. Being in the US you have easy access to Dyna diffs (basically the same as the Sals) so some of their side gears will most likely fit.

I had heard that Eaton had stopped making the 101 Detroit but sellers in the US (Lucky8, Rovertracks and others) still had some in their stocks so you might still be lucky if your quick. ARB still make the 110 Defender/Series 3 locker for the sals diff but maybe not sold in the US. They are made in Melbourne so if you want one maybe check here - be warned though, even though the lockers are made in Australia, it is cheaper for an Aussie to buy lockers in the US and ship back here - in fact cost is 1/2 to 2/3 of the aussie price.

On my way to a camping trip.

My 101 is an Australian Army Rapier Missile Tractor basically still as used by the Australian Army where I assume yours is an ex Brit Gun Tractor.

We have an ex Brit here who imports 101s (he made the ARB side gears) but other than that the place to look for spares is Ebay UK, and most of the Landrover Suppliers such as Craddocks, Dunsfolds etc carry 101 parts - though many are common with other landrovers. The 101 Club in the UK (http://www.101club.org/) also have cost competitive parts but prompt service is not one of their strong points. They have an online forum as well.

I hope this helps.

Cheers

Thanks for the info. I am actually a member of the 101 club! They have lots of parts that other people like pa Blanchard, rovers north and craddocs don't have.

So would that front locker be the same as the one for the "sailsbury 1 tonne" axles that they had on some of the 109's?
I know the 101 has a unique spline count and everything else...

The locker is the one that fits the Defender 110 salsbury axle (4.7) - not sure about the 1 tonners as we do not get them here. I also understand you don't get Defenders because they are diesel so ARB US may not carry them but I am sure they could be ordered.

Well the defenders came in gas and diesel, and were sold in the states for a couple of years in the 90's. I don't believe much has changed mechanically save for engine specs sonce they came out in the early 80s

The resto has been slow going since its winter and working on this thing in the cold kind of sucks. At least lots of my European parts have come in so I can finish putting her together!
