1st ever G wagon treffen in US

Post by 4x4Pinz »

Too the little Swiss 230GE to Las Vegas for the first official US G-amboree in the US. Great time seeing how capable the newer G's are one 4x4squared and three others modified to have portals by BRM Motorsports.

Where is the photo of yours? :D There are so few of the 230GE's in the US that I'm always anxious to see others.

You may notice a roof rack on mine. I built it just before the treffen to get a road test for noise and done tell time without a load. Worked great. Now that I am home I put my roof top tent on it. Did some highway miles and seems to be very solid and quiet.

I just bought a 230GE to be stablemate to my Pinz. The previous owner took the unit plate off the grill. Can you share how it was held on? I want to put one back on and I guess I will need to fab something. Also, which tires are you running? Mine still has the 205s on it.
Thanks!

The ideal tire size on most G's is a 235/85R16 or at least around a 31" tire. (or a 31x10.50 if using a 15" wheel)

The 230 engine might be a little weak with the 235/85 size but its worth trying. It's a perfect size on the 280GE and 300GD's. The 205 tire is way too small though for sure... that's smaller than some little SUV's have on them.

I ran 255/85's or 33x10.50's on the 300GD which was pushing it for flexed out clearance and for gearing but worked fine with a 1.5" spring lift and the turbo 617 I ran.

The unit plate is held on with 4 bolts that thread into 4 plates with nuts welded to them. The plates are on page 153 of the parts book, item #18. Part number is 461-890-21-14 but I doubt they can be found. You should be able to find something useable at mcmaster.com. Here's a couple of photos:

As Vince mentioned, the 235/85R16 tire fits very nicely. I've been happy with Cooper tires but there are lots of choices available.

Thank you Paul and Vince. Very helpful information.
On the tires, I will wear out these 205s and then look to upgrade. i have been runnin Treadwright Wardens on my 710 for several years and they have been very good for me.

On the mounting plate, I have some bar stock laying around a nutsert set so I will just make my own. Paul, the pictures were great!

Thanks again to you both!

currently running 264/75R16 on my 230GE The measure out at 30" tall mounted. This is far too tall for the little 4 cylinder. I will be dropping to a tire 235 class once these get a little more wear on them. With an RTT mounted I have to push it pretty hard to maintain highway speeds on any grade at all. Fortunately I went with a second tier tire so no major investment. Good news is that these tires have performed exceptionally well. I will more then likely be picking up another set in the different size. I also chose to stay away from an aggressive tread as I wanted to keep the noise down (enjoy that so much over the pinz) I have added the 40mm spacers to gain a little body clearance and to date that is all I have needed. Some of my exploits with my G are on the Southwest Pinzgauer Facebook page.

Thanks. I kinda thought I would stay on the smaller side.
