THE PORTAL HUB - Pinzgauers, Haflingers, Volvo 303s and more!

With the 712 now sold, I'm thinking about a G-Wagen. If you squint just a little, it is part of the Pinzgauer family and has a lot of the same robust military service attributes. I know a number of folks who own several of them. Not the foo foo new $100K models but the older former military type units.

As I know many of y'all have owned them or do currently, I'd love to hear some opinions about your experiences with them and if you care to provide some guidance on the perferred models, dealers you like (here and abroad) etc.

In my old neighborhood I knew a number of people that owned “foo foo” versions, all gas V-8’s getting real bad fuel yardage.

I like the idea of the diesels without all the bells and whistles better on fuel and easier to maintain.

That said I have seen people score some very good deals on the “foo foo”s” and also on pimped out H-1’s.

I won't consider one of those if I can't take it off road for fear of bending or scratching something. I live in a part of town where there are plenty of the foo foos and it's a real head scratcher to me as to why anyone would pay in excess of $100,000 for a truck that has its origins in military services but has seemingly had most of those capabilities stripped from it.

Finding an older more simple one is the goal. I'm now learning about the various iterations of them so that's where I am in this process before I get too focused on buying one right this second.

Be aware that the early military ones and the simpler civilian ones, although very capable off road (made a jeep and Landrover look silly) due a lot to diff locks......are slow and ponderous and not exactly good starters even when new. I had the opportunity of close looks and drives in Argentine models (230G) in the Falklands back in 82, they were nice to drive but I,m a diesel man. Later around 85 I had the chance to closely look at German Army hard top models, I do not recall which engine they had although I know it was diesel and sounded a lot like my Mercedes 240D saloon/sedan car. But in -20c they took a long time to get started, much turning over and lots of smoke and they seemed very slow on the road. All in all to me an ideal car....there are ways around the slow start...(plug in engine heaters etc).

That is actually the image I shared with my wife and kids last night and everyone liked the looks of it. (me too ).

Of course now the challenge is to find one that has been well tended to (like my 712) and isn't beat to $hit.

I am just now starting this process so I don't need to find this thing this weekend.

Canadian Military will not release them for a long time

Karl at Pinzgauer Canada has quite a few late '70s Steyr Wagons. The one I looked at while waiting for my Pinz was in great shape. They were automatic, but I think they were gassers. They were listed at $16500.

I have my sights set on a G at some point as well.

If you decide to go more foo-foo and non-project, there is a 2000 on fleabay up here for $23K. Not manual, not diesel but not that expensive either.

Just remember that many of the Puch models did not come with lockers in both the front and rear

The one in the pictures had both front and rear lockers.

Did you see my post and current 4x4? I know these inside and out. If you find something let me know before buying... I might know the truck or seller. It can take a while to find one though.

I nick named my farthers "round the clock" and dare to say its done 100k miles with that trailor converted to 5 cylinder 290 , I striped the body from the chassis about 12 years ago now because my father wanted it cream white rather than stark white ,, I'd add the full build to my thread vehicles from the Steyr Puch works but not sure if it would be ok to do so :?:

If I was looking for one I'd try finding a 270cdi as think the 4.0L v8 diesel has a few isues
