Former military spec G-Wagens in Germany. What's the value?

Post by texas pinzgauer »

A buddy of mine knows that I'm hot to trot to buy a former military G-Wagen (SWB, soft top etc). His wife is German and, in a recent conversation with his father in law, the father in law says these things are crazy cheap back in Germany. From my research, I suspect they're going to be roughly in the $8,000 (US) to $18,000 (US). That's a very rough estimate given the various potential vendors I have identified for this purchase in Europe.

The father in law says that the pricing for a clean, former military unit from the mid / late 1980s is more like 500 Euros and I think that's not correct. For 500 Euros, from what I have seen, it would be completely trashed and not worth putting on a boat to the US.

I am not ready to pull the trigger on this purchase right this second but I'd be very curious if any forum members in Germany could size up the market and let me know if my numbers are accurate or are the friend's father in law's numbers are closer to the truth?

Thanks!

I am not in Germany but if you think about it....
If a nice G was only 500 Euros then pretty much everyone would own one!
The economics would be 500 for the 'nice' G and then split shipping container and import for under 1500.
A friend over on the Mog board purchased a Wolf and it was WAY above 500 (add a zero and then times by 2 - 3)

That's my thinking as well and we've had that conversation off line too, right? Even if they're used by all or nearly all military programs in Europe, even beat to $hit, they're going to be more than $700 (US), right?!

Uh, that's way off. $500 would cause me to temporary restart the importing business and I'd be rich very fast. $500 might buy a set of used wheels. $8000 is a solid average for an average condition truck plus shipping, etc.

Heard from my friend here is what he said about the Wolf
"8-16k euro depending on condition. The 8-9k ones were in Kosovo in real war duty"

The friend's father in law stands corrected! I told him that, without question, former military spec G-Wagens were more in the 5,000 euro to 15,000 euro range and that those numbers were confirmed by both the individuals and the dealers with which I had spoken about these trucks.

The father in law finally backed down and said that he was...confused!

Most of the SWB mil. G's are rusted pretty bad and, as you probably know, 240's or 230's. Have you thought about a LWB? There are several more of those around.

Check this out in the UK (and its left hand drive). It looks pretty nice so far though I'd like to know how rust, if any, was handled before the respray. http://army-uk.com/equip.php?ID=631
The UN white ones at the bottom are kinda interesting, except the wheels. http://army-uk.com/equip.php?ID=281
