50+ year old Land rover 2a diesel (63rover) and my 79 -710m

Post by 63rover »

Just joined the group recently. Enjoying reading and learning more. Just thought I would share my trucks.

Cheers, Clive

aka 63rover

PS The Pinz is on BFG 295/75/16 which makes it 10% faster than the speedo reads.

Yup very nice!
Fill in your location in your profile for us and let us know if those tires are on stock or widened rims?

Wheels look stock - but I think the size is actually a 285/75-16 which do fit OK on the standard rim but can rub and are stressful on the steering box mounting I hear.

Welcome and nice trucks! I had the same year type 2a with safari top until a few years back. Both great trucks for sure.

Thanks for the replies. I live just outside Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

The rims are stock and the tires are 295s. The BFG application chart rates them as fine for the stock rim width. I changed to them from a worn set of original tires. The steering in fine as long as you are moving, of course. They do not rub at full lock in either direction but they did leave very interesting black circles on the road near my house when I tried the full lock circles after getting them mounted. To date they have only been through a foot of sloppy mud with no troubles. (Left mud on the wheel nuts and my girlfriend squealing in the front seat. Is it my fault she came for a ride in high heals?)

Nice trucks!

Years ago I bought 8" widened rims from SoCal and they came with the same BFG 295's on them. They were on my 8,000 lb 712W and I did get the occasional rub, surprisingly only under the passenger door when going too fast on rough roads. Steering was a pain; I live where winding roads are the norm, and the steering effort on pavement was 2-3 times that of my 710 with 265's (even with 60psi in the fronts). I guess if you traverse a lot of sand and maybe mud the wider tire has its value, but when they wore out I bought 265's (still on the wide rim) and I have been happier for it.

Another Ontario Pinz owner - Yippie!
We will have to have a mini Treffen this summer!
Post some more pics of your Pinz and let us know where you got it - looks like a very clean 710m
I am in Toronto and there are 3 more active Ontario members and a few more that mainly 'read' the site.

Sounds like a great idea. There is a Toronto Rover group as well as the Ottawa Valley Land Rover Club I go out with at times. Also planning a longer run on the Trans Canada Adventure Trail in Ont. or Que. this summer. Did the Trans Labrador last year so will stay closer this time.

The Pinz has 60k ish on it and is nice and tight. I got it last fall just east of the end of the 407. Saw it on the way back from Fenlon Falls and had to have it.

Cheers, Clive

Welcome...you lovely Series 2 Landrover makes me sad because it reminds me of the one that I totally rebuilt in the couple of years before emigrating to Poland....I wish I had known as I rebuilt it that I was going to make the move, I would have done a LHD conversion and it would still be with me. My Pinz is a 710K with an OM602 diesel conversion, I run on Goodyear G90s at 7.50x16........the 68 Landrover has ben replaced with an UAZ 469b, which has an Andoria 4C90 diesel, which is also surprisingly slightly better off road than a Series Landrover due to the springs being mounted above the axles and the axles being split axles so the diff is knife edge and cuts instead of ploughs.
