Fuel consumption

Post by Stewartuk »

Hi folks

What would you reckon is a normal diesel mpg. My P93 718 is doing around 20lt/100kms. Is this a typical fuel use.

20 l/100km = 11.7607 mpg (US)

Unfortunately, it's been 6 years since I sold my P80 716 w/ manual box, but (iirc) the typical mileage wasn't much better than the mileage was in my 710 or 712 which was 11 ish  But generally, most trips were short 'in town' and hard on mileage
My ATL 718k w/ 2.5TDI and auto box has gotten 15 +/- mpg (US), when I did check it.

Thanks. Some of the problem is it takes a while to get all that 6 wheel drive mechanism up to speed. The turbo lag in that old 2.4 doesn’t help either. Have you heard of anyone who has successfully fitted a variable vane turbo. I know s tech considered it a while back. I could go down the route of fitting the 2.5 but am not so keen on the electronics. There might be a few engines coming up as the UK army are releasing a few hundred Pinz over the next year according to rumour

Cheers

Hi Pinzi

Where did you get the mechanical pump from for the mtdi. I had a syncro many years ago with a mechical mtdi pump from Bernd Jaeger but he does only the 1.9. What did you use for the turbo.

Hi..i have a 2.5 tdi from a 99' Volvo v70 in my 716 so i only had to built a right engine mount , the left one is the one came from the 2.4... the turbo is the original one on the 2.5 TDI. I had my pump done in the Netherlands by DA-BART this guy is or was active on the vw tdi forum but i Hear he is now in Saudi Arabië? Mine is a automatic and the zf 22 fits right against the 2.5....?.i dont think there is a lot of diference between the 1.9 and the 2.5 pump only That the 2.5 is a 5cyl and the 1.9 a 4 cyl. The driveshaft from the zf22 to the hi/lo case needs to be made about 5 cm longer as the 5 cyl is shorter.

My only experience with this style of truck is with my Landrover FC 101 - it is of similar size and weight to the Pinz - cruises at 100kph - I get 19l/100km on an easy drive on the highway and in mixed driving about 22l/100km. I guess similar to what you are getting but my vehicle is running a 3.5 litre petrol V8 so your diesel should be doing a lot better.

My RRS 2.7 TDv6 pulling the 2.5 tonne car (it weighs more than the 101 empty) at 110kph gives 7l/100km and about 10l/100km around town but it is a modern high performance diesel. I would expect the older style diesel in your Pinz to be giving around 14-15l/100km (or better) driving along at your normal cruise on the highway (85kph?). Our ex Army Landrover Perentie 110s with their Isuzu 3.9 4 cylinder diesels average around 12l/100km cruising and the 6x6 versions a bit worse.

So I would say your fuel consumption is too high and should be investigated.

Good luck.

Yes its a bit hi but i always found the 2.4 a bit under powered, if you have a automatic Like i have its Like every Time it shifts
The 2.4 takes time to speed up i mean it shifts waits a few seconds en then goes, while with the 2.5 it just shifts and takes of there is no gap....i think its thanks to the higher torq That the 5 cyl has against the 6 cyl. With this said and becouse it drives and shifts better feul consumption goes down, i have about 14-15 l . I know there are 3 versions of the 2.4 being used in the Volvo 700 series....the frist one being a flat 2.4 6cyl then came the 2.4 Td (same as the pinz) and then the 2.4 TIC same one but with intercooler...the last one having 122hp, still a bit underpowered in the 716 so defenetly in a 718.
