718 Won't start!!

Post by Boelt63A »

My 718 won't start. Engine spins but doesn't catch at all. I've got power to the glow plugs but can't figure out why it won't start. No smoke from exhaust either.
Any ideas?

check the wire to the fuel cutoff solenoid on the IP. Make sure you have power and it opens..

The solenoid clicks when I hook a jumper to it but there doesn't seem to be any power to it. Truck still won't start or smoke when I crank it. I tried tracing the wire but it gets lost in a bundle.
Where does it go?

Truck won't start with jumper in place.

Try loosening a line at the injectors and make sure that there is fuel getting to them. Diesels only need fuel and air to run. Even if the glow plug system failed it would still have some ignition... But like most all car diesel of the era, they need the glow plugs to warm the combustion chamber for the first startup of the day.

And just to be sure, it was the solenoid on the injector pump that was opening, not a relay for the glow plugs

With the jumper in place the solenoid clicks furiously when I attach and detach the jumper. I am starting to think it is a fuel problem. I was convinced it was electrical.
There is fuel in the fuel filter, but I need to make sure there is diesel at the cylinders. is there an easy way to bleed the system in the engine compartment???

What preceded it not starting?
Run out of fuel?
Any change of parts?
Tune-up?
Take it swimming in the St. Johns?
Long time since last drive?
Anything that would help diagnose?

The Truck has 3/4 tank of fuel in it. It has never run out of fuel. It gets started up every three days or so and has run like a champ ever since I got it. One day it just didn't start and hasn't since. That was about two weeks ago. I just had the time to tear into it the last few days.

Crack an injector and see if you have fuel. If not trace back the system.

For reference we have had to replace all of the fuel lines and injection pump seals on all of the trucks. More than likely they were run on regular diesel, and have sat for considerable time. When you start putting ULSD through them it will cause issues.

I have the Injection pump seal kits in stock....they run about $40-50 with the correct shaft seal.

Cheers,
