New (to me) 718M, and oil consumption question.

Post by NM_Mogman »

Hello all,

I am the proud new owner of that awesome red & black 718M, thanks to Mopar! Anyway, I am driving it cross country back to NM, and have found that I have to keep adding oil at the end of the day of travel. Anyone have this issue before, and have advise on how to slow or stop this until I can make it home? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Phil

Congratulations on your new truck.
Do you know if you're burning or leaking it? Check the exhaust pipe for oil residue, and for puddles developing when stopped, or any wet locations on the underside of the truck from blown oil.

The earlier TDs were known to run hot ( and any other heavier application of that engine), so they had a oil cooler between the oil filter and engine, and were known for leakage. The Swedish had removed the one on my old 716. Also, let the engine idle to cool down before shutting it off after driving.
All the SOCOM truck were either P90s , or upgraded P80s, you may want to post the last 4 digits of your VIN so to know what it was built as originally.
And if you aren't already a member, join the yahoo Turbo D group. Not active, but the parts manual you'll need is there.

Hey Mopar
You can buy my other Supacat now.

Check your rear camshaft seal, it may look like the valve cover gasket is leaking. I changed my vc gasket 3 times before figuring out it was the seal.

I did not see any sign of oil in the exhaust pipe, but there is oil under the truck. The picture of oil on the side of the pan is most likely from spilled oil during filling. The other two, I am not entirely sure of... Any ideas? I will have to take the covers off to check the cam seal.

Here is the link to the photos I just snapped...still not good at attaching pics!

If you can, get some degreaser and take the truck to self car wash with a high pressure sprayer to get yourself a "clean" truck underneath. Take some pics as a base comparison and again to see what the change is.

Also, how much oil are you adding at what number of miles? It may not be all that out of line.

I have to add about 3-4 quarts every 4-500 miles. I will clean it as suggested. I will post up pics as soon as I can get it done.

Thanks for all the advise!

When the seal leaks, it drips from the passenger side rear corner on the valve cover. You can see it from underneath.

Not sure where to point you you could try http://www.d24t.com/ as they have a lot of experience with the engine. How many hours a day have you been averaging 8 or 9? I think giving a good cleaning and checking for a leak as with all the highway driving you've been doing a leak might be hard to see. About how many miles have you driven so far I'm guessing 1500 miles was it the same on the leg from here to VA or from VA to OH. Did it get worse in the hills of WV? Maybe post on the D24T and someone can give you some more specific places to look. Just a couple quick links

I would guess that it is close to 1,500 miles by now. I was averaging about 8-10 hours a day, and it did seem to consume more in the hills of WV. I will definitely clean it, take pics, drive it, then take more pics to see if I can locate the leak. I will also check out those links, which I really appreciate! The engine runs quiet and strong, but I can tell by the amount of soot/smoke screen it produces when the oil is low. I was going to run some cleaner through the oil, then change it, but decided to hold off till I get home. I will just closely monitor the oil level, and use Lucas Oil Additive for added protection when the oil gets low. I will be sure to let you all know what I find, when I get back home to my most excellent diesel mechanic friend. I have a few more days in Cincinnati, so I can at least clean it up first.

Thanks again for all the help! I love this forum, and you are all great. I hope I can one day repay the kindness.

Thanks again,
Phil

I would make sure to check before you reach needing 4 quarts as the capacity is 6 with filter. Don't want you to blow the engine.

Glad you made it home safe. So many miles did you drive altogether.
I'll text you where to send my plates and stuff as I just moved out and am in between house right now. Give me a call when you get a chance.

Now that you have been home for a while, what was the source of the leak?

After you wash the engine up good, i suggest you get a floresent dye kit to determine where the leak is comming from.
It is one of the best tool sets out thier to deterime the source
