Front drive shaft removal

Post by OhioPinz »

Is it possible to remove the front drive shaft through the reduction gear housing without removing the whole axle assembly? I need to replace the bearing.

Nope - it is easiest to pull the rear suspension if the bearing having an issue is back there. The bearings are part of the diff housings (not actually part of the driveshaft at all - see the "witch hat" assembly which also includes the front drive selector / diff lock selectors.

Sorry, I meant the bearing on the front right half shaft, not in the drive shaft. It was late...

so to be precise you want to replace bearings 6 and 33 of http://www.puch.at/en/spare-parts/pinzg ... ront-axle/

you will have to remove the brake bracket which holds the needle bearing.
you get the ball point bearing out of the axle fist you'd better pull off the axle fist. this pulls out the shaft from the bearing.

hope that helps
Cheers

Hotzenplotz,
He has a 718, though many minor parts are the same as a 710/12, many parts were changed in the TDs.
Axles/portals are a major difference in components between the two.
Always reference a TD manual for TDs. It is the only place you can be sure a 710xxx part number was used in a 716/18.

In the Pingauer Turbo D Parts book, Page TA 136, showing Group 08 02 13, I need to replace the following bearings:
5, 9, 23, 19, as well as oil seals. Can I do this by pulling the "wheel drive housing" or must I pull the entire half shaft? The nomenclature is confusing.

On the front you can pull the king pins and pull the axle out through the ball, then dismantle the reduction box.
You may need to rotate the axle to get the CV through the ball casting.

btw that was perfect use of the TA # and ref #. made my life easy. :)
Now if I'd just bookmark my manual pdf
