Doors weatherstripping / seal replacement
Hi, does anybody know of a suitable aftermarket replacement seal available on the market? The cost of the original one from S-Tech is not affordable.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Doors weatherstripping / seal replacement
I've seen such prevous discussions but I'm talking about Diesel models whose door seals are completely different.
Thanks anyway

Sorry about that.gunipinzmutt wrote:I've seen such prevous discussions but I'm talking about Diesel models whose door seals are completely different.

I do believe one of those posts talks about buying stripping and making your own, however. That is pretty much an aftermarket approach.
SAV does sell them for the Diesels as well, but I am not sure if that price is comparable to S-Tech.

Re: Doors weatherstripping / seal replacement
I've found a couple of "off the shelf" door foam extrusions that look like they may work, but I've never really experimented much.
Some of them have slightly different shapes and forms, but I reckon the fit and sealing surfaces were in the correct orientation and the sizes were similar, so they may do the job.
Given that rubber/foam extrusion dies aren't that expensive (manufacturing wise...we've just had one done for a client) I expect SDP designed their own, that best suited their application rather than use a standard OEM design or one used by another manufacturer.
Have you tried posting the question on Robi's Forum? ....there are a lot of TD owners there who may have some ideas.
You could look at Mercedes extrusions as the G-Wagen rear door design is similar to TD rear door design, so I'm guessing the rubber/foam seal may be similar (but then again been Mercedes it may be cheaper to buy the original )
I'II be up for 5 door seals soon, but given all the other things I have to spend my time and money on with the 718, I may just bite the bullet and pay the money

Re: Doors weatherstripping / seal replacement
I guess you will change your mind when you will realize that the cost for the rear door one (soft top) from S-tech is half the cost of an extrusion die been manufactured.
For the moment I need only that one for a 716M and will check with SAV, but in the future I will need more for a 716K so if you, or somebody else, will try to fabricate one or will find a valid aftermarket substitute I will be interested.
In the meantime I will check military G models ones to see if they have same shape.
Thanks

Re: Doors weatherstripping / seal replacement
Gunipinzmutt - can you send me the part numbers you're interested in and I'll check them on my system? I naively thought that door seals weren't a major problem to source but I wouldn't be surprised if I'm proved wrong....

WEATHERSTRIP TAILGATE SOFTTOP 7161770800
WEATHERSTRIP TAILGATE HARDTOP 7181770800
WEATHERSTRIP DOOR FRONT RH 7161760800
WEATHERSTRIP DOOR FRONT LH 7181760810
WEATHERSTRIP DOOR REAR RH 7181760800
WEATHERSTRIP DOOR REAR LH 7181760810
These are spare weatherstrips ready to mount (with welded corners) but it would also be interesting to find a source for seal per meters.
I've checked and the profile is the same of Mercedes G tailgate.
I can have it produced locally but in compact rubber, instead of spongy one, and in quantity exceeding my needs.

Re: Doors weatherstripping / seal replacement
Well I checked out our supply chain today but there wouldn't be any cost savings buying from us at present. Looks like something with cost-down potential though so I'll put it on the "to-look-at" list!
Re: Doors weatherstripping / seal replacement
In Aus we have a number of "after-market" suppliers of auto rubber, but as the G-Wagen is sold in minimal numbers here, aftermarket components are virtually non-existent.
I'm guessing that in Europe (and the US) someone may make aftermarket rubber profiles for the G (that rubber profile maybe used on other Merc's as well) and even if the raw extrusion isn't available, complete cheaper aftermarket door seals may provide material from which to make new TD seals.
An example of the some of the "offerings" of one local company here are below.
