Age and US requirements

Post by Pinzbuyer »

How old does a Pinzgauer have to be before it can be brought into the United States without any safety and or environmental modifications made to it?

Thank you.

It depends on what state you reside in  In California 1974 and older applies, and as far as I know TD,s can only be registered for off road use.

The general rule is pre-1986. That is the year many of the EPA and DOT regs were enforced. Go to the Customs and Border Protection web site for detailed data on how to import a car, and what rules apply.

there is a 25 year rolling exemption for dot or hwy safety....

there is a 21 year rolling exeption for epa requirements....

so basicly the truck has to be 25 years old...

you can bring in a younger truck but it would either have to be...conformitized.... forgot the realword... but basically undooable.... or titled as off road only or farm use only or racing or show.... none the less they all have driving restrictions on them....

once it is imported as one of the above... it stays that way even if it turns 25 in the us....

It would have to be exported and re-imported to change its status....

I have heard this can be done in a day by driving to mexico and driving back....

with some paperwork in between....

How exactly would someone go about finding info on when their Pinz was imported?
The oldest record on my title says something like "Previously titled in AR", but nothing more.

I know how to verify the VIN and production daye through Steyr, but I can't find anything about discovering the date of importation to the United States.

:?: :?: :?:

Mine has an inspection sticker of some sort 2001 near the grille (as seen in photo). The only records with the vehicle were emissions testing from the military that seem to correspond with the same date? Whatever language it's in I can't read it anyway.
