Its all about timing...

Post by NC_Mog »

What is the most advance that a Pinz engine can run on regular unleaded gas? I thought I had read somewhere that the Pinz engine was sensitive to timing.

The reason I ask is that after installing a Pertronix module, I checked the timing. It was slightly advanced, so I adjusted the distributor back. I was only able to get it to around 5mm advanced with a warm engine (I believe the stock spec is 3mm advance with a warm engine). The engine rpm at idle correspondingly went up slightly. I'm trying to decide if I leave the timing at 5mm and adjust the carbs to give a lower idle speed or if I adjust the distributor more. The reason I didn't adjust the dizzy back more is that it seemed to be physically blocked from turning any more...I'm thinking it may have to be adjusted one tooth over.

Max advance here at 6000 ft I go about 7 degrees max.

Remember on the dizzy there is not a gear lilke a Chevy or Ford. There is a flat with an offset drive spline. If you try hard enough you can get it 180 out.
