Check out a place that sells horse saddles and see what they recommend.

Here's the stuff I've used in the past, it holds up well to the enviroment but has to be regularly maintained:

There may be a product that lasts longer, but this stuff is well proven and of high quality.

Since you are in the UK try to seek out a product called KOH-CHA-OLINE.
Prounounced "coacholean" it is made by Burnaby & Chantrell of Liverpool.

Found in most up market horse tack stores this product waterproofs and keeps leather supple so that it doesn't crack. Its popular with equestrian cross country eventers and those in the know so to speak.

Hi Dennis,

Well there is a lot of horse people here endurance events are very popular. Liverpool is my home town not that I go there very much these days. I have had a look on line but nothing either for the product or the company? There are lots of equine stores around here so when I am about I shall have a look. lanolin is a waterproofing and healing agent this is found in sheep's wool. Sheep's wool is unusual in that when it gets wet is is exothermic so helping to keep the sheep warm when they get a soaking, I am not sure if it is the wool or the lanolin that contributes to this! :)
