Well gents I suppose it had to happen one day!
A customer e mailed, a gearbox was due to arrive for repair by UPS.
Once we got it out of the case, we tore it down for inspection. During the initial excercises one thing was apparent, a brownish thick constiency of the remaining oil in the gerabox case. Once opened all was revealed, the presence of "water in the works". Corrosion had destroyed all the vital rolling surfaces on the shafts and the teeth flanks. In short a good gearbox destroyed by simple neglect.
If you are a "submarine type", make sure after the event you check your oils, remember the gearbox DOES have a breather on the top cover that can and will allow the ingress of water into the case if it is submerged for an extended period.
