Second 12V Alternator
Has anyone added a second alternator that runs 12V? I remember seeing pictures of an alternator mount but don't remember where. I'm contemplating a separate 12V system to power accessories including a winch and not taxing the stock system.

I was just looking at this one last night. It's expensive since it's from Switzerland, but it might give you ideas for the mount. I can't remember if SAV or EI make one too.

Nice but there may be other options that are less expensive for my needs.
My dilemma is that I want to install a winch that is detachable and can be used on the 24V Pinz as well as my 12V truck. Another option I am considering is a 24V/12V charging converter with a dedicated 12V deep cycle battery and a 12V winch. Google Waeco and look at their UK site for some nice, reasonably priced charging converters.

haiving the ability to take my winch with me where ever I go is why I went with the hand winch. Don't need any other power than myself. The units are tough and easily managed. The hand winches can also help when putting a pinz back on its wheels without worrying about side angle pulls on the nose or tail cones. Also work with any one elses truck you go with.

magneto goodness
I mounted a magneto instead of the alternator. it gives me 30 amps of 12 volt into a separate battery to run the 12 volt stuff. Check out the thread at Steel Soldiers

I had the 2nd alternator installed and after re-working the mount it has turned out to be a good alternative to the converter option as it allows me to basicaly run whatever I want the only bad side I can think of is that it is one more moving part that something can go wrong with, then again you can just take it out if you can live without your 12volt accessories.

Yes the main pully was pulled and the 2nd pully was welded on and we, in one of our more energetic repair sessions, sent it off and had it ballaced but originaly it wasn't never caused much worry but figured it can't hurt to have it streightend out. Thanks I'm not shure if you could use one belt or not its actually to me at least kidna nice to have 2 as it gives you complete redundancy and keeps the cooling fan turning if something happens to the alternator.
