clutch question

The clutch starts grabbing when the pedal is 90% of the way out, is there anyway I can make it grab sooner? Do I need an adjustment?

Sounds like the disk is worn.

Working on the clutch in the Pinny is a breeze.

Christmas last year, I had sold my Classic RR and was waiting for a suitable P38 replacement, so in the meantime I was using my 712 as a daily driver.
A few days before the "big day" I was off to a pre Christmas lunch when the thrust bearing collapsed  ..... I removed the box and changed the bearing that morning (by myself), and still had time to shower and get there in time! ...... The only other vehicle that is "maybe" simplier to work on as regards the clutch is a Haffy!

it being a breeze is a little bit of a relief

In the case of us mechanically challenged folks that breeze is liable to be a hurricane.

Hello Peter, nice to see you pop back in. Hope all is well and it isn't getting too hot "Down Under."

It's easy

I did it in the driveway by myself one night with a six pack. Very easy to DIY.

it might take me more than a 6 pack but i will let you know how it went. i am pretty mechanically inclined but never done a clutch on a 4x4

G'Day Andy,

I've been a bit busy of late but I have been "lurking"

They keep warning us to expect hot weather this Summer and that the fire danger will be extreme, but nothing so far.
I daresay the heat will strike soon ....and with a vengance

If you want to do a "hands on" (a little bit more than changing filters etc) job on the Pinny, that is not going to tax ones mechanical dexterity, then removing the gearbox and working on the clutch is probably the way to go..... apart from overcoming the weight of the box itself and lining up the thrust plate prior to bolting it is a nice basic job.

Peter, I just had the 712 looked at and the clutch supposedly is fine. I expect I will get my opportunity to try a clutch replacement on the 710 before too long. But, right now the 710 (well both really) are running almost too well. I'm just happy Dennis was able to enlighten me a little while I was up there in August.

I'd put up pictures of the 710's new grill guard, but I can't copy photos from photobucket all of a sudden.

It's chamber of commerce weather here right now, but we are back in the drought cycle. Dry as can be. I don't really like the shorter days, too much to do to cram into only about 11 hours of daylight.

Hopefully it won't get too hot down there and you'll get a little moisture in the form of rain, not humidity to go with the warm weather.

Apologies to purplePinzer for getting off thread so badly.

Cheers,

Andy

On the subject of Pinzy clutches, one of mine lets out a little "howl" when letting the pedal out. It engages at about the same pedal position. Is it a plate or a bearing?

A howl or a squeal??
I'm guessing it's the thrust bearing .... they are "grease-able" BTW.

Andy: You'll have to invest in one of those "wearable headlights" so you can work longer hours! :D

Believe it or not, I just bought one of those about two weeks ago, for the first time in my life. Works okay, but I need a brighter one. I would say pretty "handy", but "heady" is more appropriate. :D :D

Glad to hear this is straightforward - the clutch in my 712 has just started slipping under hard acceleration, so guess that either the clutch plate is on its last legs or maybe the plate is contaminated (oil seal?). I'm thinking maybe the latter at the pedal still engages at the normal point - its not come up the top of the travel... :?

Bit miffed to be honest as I've not had the truck long, but what can you expect with an old vehicle?

Any other advice before I get stuck into this at the weekend?!? Any "step-by-step" photo guides kicking around?!?
