Bolt Specification Change.

Post by Profpinz »

I just had the Pinny in the workshop to change the front "wheel drive" seal.
It's a fairly straightforward job but I always have the Parts Book and Repair manual on hand for reference.
Whenever I do this job, I always replace the bolts that lock the washer onto the axle and hold the stub in place..... not always necessary, but cheap insurance!

This time I grabbed my later copies of the books (1983 version) rather than my standard one I leave in the workshop (1977 version) and was interested to note that the bolts had been upraded from M8X20 Grade 8.8, to M8x20 Grade 10.9
They have also upgraded the repair instructions in the later manual to reflect this change, with emphasis on the bolts and torque setting.

I was curious if anybody had heard of any trouble in this area with the earlier setup etc.

I have seen a couple bolt failures on early(71-72) trucks and replaced them with 10.9. Of note, most pre 73 Pinzgauers lack the puller holes or threads on the ring gear support, This makes it a little more fun to replace the inner axle seals
So be glad it was a wheel seal :D

Which is the seal you are talking about Jim?
Do you mean seal Gr3.10 - Fig 19 _ Seal ring (45-58-7)?

Well I guess as I progressively replace the wheel seals I'd better upgrade the bolts. .... You live and learn all the time! :D
