removing the factory undercoating?

i need to strip the underside of my 710m down to metal .I am using an angle grinder with a heavy wire brush it works but its slow is there a better way?

Slow and messy.

I didn't remove any of the original undercoating, on the body tub, since it was in good shape. However there were some smaller parts with the undercoating on them, paint stripper took it off on these parts with ease.

It was still messy and I don't think it would be any easier, since you still have to wire the parts, to clean them completely.

A good scraper would remove the bulk of it with a little elbow grease, reducing the airborn particals.

I've found a small sandblaster works well, especially in areas where the undercoating is loosening already. It's fast.

Chemical dipping works well, but only if the body (tray) is removed! :wink:

I've had it done to a number of Pinzgauer parts and a Haflinger body, but as I replaced most of the tray panels in my Pinny during the rebuild, there was no need to "dip" the body in that particular instance.

I haven't tried this on a Pinz, but I've removed the undercoating/sound deading material on other cars with dry ice. I'd take a few blocks and lay them down and hit them with a dead blow hammer to break them up and get better coverage, then wait a few minutes and start pounding it more with the dead blow. The undercoating would get so cold it was brittle and would shatter off nicely.

I cleaned out a 79 928 and a 91 LS400 using this method, great weight reduction on a cheap race car :)
