Andre's racks

Post by Jimm391730 »

The rack Andre made for my 710 is built in three seperate pieces: the two ladder "hoops" that mount to the rub rail and the rack itself. Each hoop (dual, with ladder rungs between them) probably weigh about 75 lbs each. They were made about 1/2" wider than the truck, and just took a little push to fit them tight to the truck to bolt in place; this made assembly easy. The forward hoop assembly attaches to the antenna mount for extra stability.

The rack itself is built with slightly thinner walled tubing to keep the weigh down; it weighs about 150 lbs and was easy for Andre and I to pick it up and slide it over the hoops from the side. Then it bolts to the hoops in six places.

When it was first installed I noticed a slight increase in the "top heaviness" but not a whole lot of difference. However, put 6-700 pounds of gear up there and it sways quite a bit off road, but actually seems to ride smoother as the top doesn't want to change direction quickly! But watch out for fast cuves or rapid lane changes on the highway! It requires a wholed different style of driving (meaning slow, gentle, and with an eye far down the road).

Eric has hit the nail on the head. reguardless of how much experience I have around the "bolt on racks", I wouldn't dare to attempt to reconstruct them do to their superior design and function. To carry my junk!

It's actually the CN Tower (Canadian National Railway) in Toronto

...not that anyone's actually looking at it, but hey...( it is the tallest free-standing structure in the world!)

ARVOps,

Your transition from ugly duck to great looking swan turned out great!! When you get time, please post some more pictures of your truck with the cage area especially. I did this same transformation from ambulance to type M and it was very very expensive. Your solution is excellent and I suspect very cost effective. Again, great looking truck!!

Ka, you would have to ask Andre about the hard top. It came with the truck. I don't know it he made it or not.

Andre, how about some Ugly Duck history?
