I've got appreciable leakage of gear lube occuring, causing the differential oil to enter the wheel drive units on one side of each rear axle.
A previous post read: As long as the oil is not leaking onto the ground I would just plan to replace the stop ring at your convenience (no hurry). You will need a stop ring, the thick rubber dust ring, and a new O ring for the stop ring bore. (Jim L.)
But it also read this: Usually when oil gets into the boot it is an indication of a worn stop ring seal(part of the stop ring ,drive axle removal required ) or the O rings behind the ball cup(requires diff teardown to access) (again, Jim L.)
Question: how does one determine if it's just the stop ring, etc. or if it's the O-rings behind the ball cup? (WAG system? Replace the easy stuff first and see?)
Thanks,
Paul Underwood

Re: differential leak at axle - question
Paul, if diff oil is getting into the portal axles, then the diff will have to come out, portals removed , and apart to replace the inner axle seals. This also requires removal of the enclosed needle bearing assembly(9006828) to replace the seal(9013835).undysworld wrote:I've got appreciable leakage of gear lube occuring, causing the differential oil to enter the wheel drive units on one side of each rear axle

It will be easy now to replace the O-ring behind the ball cup while you are there.
