Just wondered what people do about secure storage on their M vehicles? I've just ordered a "Van Vault" to fit into mine for the odds and ends I want to keep secure. Anyone done anything sexy for this?

I'm considering building a custom hard top with a center console that has electronics in it along with some kind of locking doors to protect that stuff. Oh, and some integrated speakers. I gots to have my tunes, and really like having a GPS. But I really don't like having things stolen...

for me a rack on the front that acts as a sun shade and sort of like bars over the cavas top and door locks. oh ya, there is the 114 # doberman, kimber, keltec and if im feeling sluggish and not real quick there is the garand. for the stuff in the back ive got a stinger missle case (no missle, rats) bolted to the left side where the seat pads were. air/water tight and lockable.

Eric Minnick put locks on the front doors and used a club over the fold down portion of the cage to keep the cab area secure. There's no reasonable way to secure the back half, after all, anyone who can lift the shock cord up can get in.

Security on soft-top vehicles is always a problem.
Years ago a friend of mine had some stuff nicked out of his Suzuki Sierra (4WD soft-top)
Whilst they could have just undone the tie down cords, they instead slashed the rear canvas and just reached in!

I recently saw a Land Rover 101 FC which was used for touring and looked quite stock, but when you looked inside, the canvas covered a complete wire mesh "cage"!

Factory civilian Pinzgauers do have locks on the front doors and an optional lock is available for the rear.

I don't know if it is a good thing, but lowlife is equally stupid this side of the earth: the same thing happened to me when I had a Jeep Wrangler. They proceeded to nick the radio/tape player by slashing through the side window of the canvas top... while the soft doors have no locks! They didn't even try to pull on the door handle...

Back on topic, someone posted pics of a custom-made lockable box sitting against the bulkhead, in the rear compartment, narrow enough to still allow the rear seats to be folded (I cannot find the link to that thread just now). That's what I will consider at some point in the future.

For the cab, I added the factory locks to the front doors, not really to prevent theft, but more to avoid people messing with/in my truck... or to avoid finding a drunk sitting behind the wheel (which happened to me as well with the Wrangler and the soft doors...  ).

I never carry anything of value unless I plan to stay with the vehicle. There's always the lockable tool box for small items.
In almost 10 years of ownership I have never had a problem with theft. Mostly people want to know what the Pinzgauer is, not what's in it.

I know what you mean, but we'll be using this as a camper this summer and I know that there will be the odd time we'll be away from the truck and won't be able to take everything of any value with us (and in the UK at the mo even "low value" stuff seems to go missing with horrible regularity)... hence the vault idea.

Interesting comments from everyone tho.

1. Erik... Glock 18!
2. psychoman..... I use the tool box, but you can get several sizes of small safes from harbor freight at a reasonable price. I put one in my camper, installing it with nutserts into the frame and bolts from inside the safe.

Security was a concern when I converted my 716K into a 5dr M.
I added 2 standard tool boxes against the bulkhead and use Abus disc locks for security. There is no shackle exposed to be cut, and the only way to break in is to cut the handles completely. They look like they belong there, and nothing screams "break into me" more than a 'out of place' custom lockbox.

hmmmmm  never thought of that. Damn fine idea......... Later after I get registered.

Still wondering if I can reuse the mortar ammo rack for any good use.

The lock is the Abus Diskus # 24/60 ( not any of the other larger ones). It should fit the later boxes without any mods.. or at worse, a little grinding of a bevel into the handles .
Let me know if you can't find them locally.
