You don't see these come up for sale very often. I've only seen 2 in the last 10 years and both at significant prices.

The engine is complete as shown in the photos and also includes the 2 headers, all the carb linkages and the engine stand (less casters), also all as seen in the photos.
The engine stand was built by me from Jim LaGuardia's design.
One exhaust stud is snapped off but extends enough to get a grip on it with the appropriate removal tool.
The headers were cut off a bit short and may need extensions added.
An additional pulley was added to the crankshaft pulley to drive a second alternator I was told.
I've installed a new alternator wiring harness, 2 crankcase ventilation hoses and 2 new engine mounts.

The engine was in good running condition when removed from a 712M and had completed a trip from California to Texas without any issues. The previous owner is swapping a diesel into the 712.

I have not set a price on the engine but do have an idea what it's worth. If you're truly interested PM me with any questions or to discuss.

I've had a few inquiries about this engine but no buyer yet. I'd really like to move it out of my shop but don't want to store it away - out of sight, out of mind.

If anyone has wanted to have an engine modified/upgraded by Jim at Goatwerks, this would be a great start. I'm open to offers so don't be shy.

Happy Holidays!

Paul, it appears that as a new member I'm not able to PM you. I'd like to talk to you about the motor, could you PM your phone number or email address to me at your convenience?

Thank you,
Vito

Are you shipping it? I'm just curious how you are doing it, if so.

Curious buddy, do you know which diesel engine the owner is putting in the 712?

I'm curious as I have a brand new NEVER USED OM617 block in original crate and one day I will entertain putting it in a pinzgauer and it will be a new bolt for bolt engine when finished.

Thanks for posting. Beautiful engine!!

Not to derail this thread but it looks like it may be sold so...
Why try to put a om617 in a Pinz?
It only has 88hp so similar power and then you have to try to figure out the water cooled parts and where to put them.
Would be cool to repower an old 300GD with it and make a killer trail rig :)

I think that he's installing a VW diesel in the 712.

The 617 is far too heavy, regardless if it fit.

How do you have a new block? Where are you?

Only 88hp? LOL Not hardly... my entire childhood was spent in a brand newly purchased Mercedes with this engine, owned by my grandpa a WW2 engineer... the hp on his stock om617 rated over 125hp stock minus the things he did to it, that Mercedes could really haul on the Oregon Coast. My dad took me out on 101 and did over 120 mph torquey little thing champagne gold 1982 300SD chocolate brown leather interior.. I still remember the exact stretch of hwy this took place just south of a beautiful property owned by a famous family. I can recognize this engine by sound alone a mile away.

I knew a collector of Mercedes, he still had this brand new never used OM617 block, I bought it from him.. I also have a Powder coated chrome accessories (i love powdered coated chrome, tougher, less maintenance) for it etc. It will be a brand new engine when done. Better then even the metric motors with refurb block :o)

Yeah it's a great motor for the most part, as long as its maintained well (lots of oil changes), although their later ones like the 602 and of course 616 with mechanical IP was much better. I drive a 617A all the time in my Gwagen. You'd have to destroy a Pinz to make it fit though.. just wont work. Its all been tried and talked about to death, just so you know.

Cheers

I think the biggest issue would be the weight - that is a heavy motor to put in a already nose heavy vehicle like a 4x4 Pinzgauer. Even with the 6x6, its a lot of weight on the front two wheels to deal with.

I would find a Gwagen to stuff that engine into... less chopping required and the value would increase it if you resold it.
