WANTED Junk Speedo for Parts

Post by undysworld »

Hello,

I'm trying to fix another forum member's speedometer, and have found a damaged gear which needs replacement. So I need to find a donor speedo.

If you've got one you're willing to part with, please let me know.

Thanks,
Paul

Google North Hollywood Speedometer, they might have the part you need.

If it’s the plastic lens you are referring to as the face I have had good luck refinishing them. Usually the exposed surface can be sanded to remove yellowing and minor scratches then re polished. I typically start by wet sanding with 400 paper and work up to 1000 grit than finish with plastic polish.

Pinzinator,

Thanks, I'll check with N. Hollywood.

Man on the Mule,

Please let me know if you do have one for sale. I was hoping to pick something up for just freight charges, as I'm pretty sure he isn't willing to spend a lot to fix his old one. But your price is fair (especially if it works) and I can offer it, if you do find it.

Edzz,

A headlight resurfacing kit seems to work well on the bezel face. It's much easier if the crimp ring is off.

Thanks for the input guys.

Well, FYI, N. Hollywood Speedo is of no help as far as parts sales go:

"Unfortunately our company is not set up to retail speedometer repair parts and we also don't have a lead for you. None of the instrument manufacturers make parts available which makes the overall parts situation extremely difficult."

Still seeking a parts donor...

Paul,
Have you tried looking at a speedo from a VW or another Euro car of the same era? I would think many would use the same guts.

Thanks Dave. No, as a matter of fact I haven't.

As it turns out, Morris sent me a second speedo, with a taped-on handwritten label saying "Volvo". He said that it's speed readout wasn't correct in the Pinz. But other than the part number, it looks identical to the Pinz unit.

I was reluctant to tear it apart, since it apparently was intact and might have been worth something to a Volvo owner.

I also assumed that the gear might have been Pinz-specific, if the speed readout was different. ??

I guess I'll have to just pull it apart and see what's in there. I'll report back...

Hey Paul.

The repair that I originally used as a guide was for a Porsche VDO speedo and the cogs look the same....these two parts in particular look identical and were an issue on mine.

When I took apart a volvo(303) speedo...from what I could tell it was the same as the Pinzy ones which leads me to believe that the difference in the two is @ the other end of the cable where it goes into the drive assembly under the rig. Hope that helps?

Berger,

Yes, that is the most common place for the speedo to fail, when the speedo works and the odo doesn't. But surprisingly, this speedo failed before that point. Those gears weren't even moving, because the initial gear which moves that assembly was stripped.

Roverchef,

I may have to just pull this "Volvo" speedo apart and count it's teeth.

I've been reluctant to disassemble it, for a couple reasons.
First, Morris (?, somebody) marked the speedo as "volvo", and noted that it read out too high. I haven't swapped it into my truck to test, simply because I didn't want to go through that extra work after he stated it didn't work.
Second, I'd agreed to fix it super cheap, on the agreement that he'd send some extra 'parts' speedos along. But one is a dead electronic VDO (hall sensor appears okay though) and the other is this apparently intact (and maybe re-saleable) 'volvo' speedo. If I tear apart the 'volvo' speedo, it's twice the work for even less pay/parts.

I don't want to be a cheapskate, especially to Morris. But I'd feel better if I could find a part out of a true junk speedo. At any rate, thanks for a BTT!

Paul

ps Anybody need a good used hall-sensor for their electronic VDO speedo?

Thanks Mike for the background on it.

Can you confirm if the KPH readout of this Volvo speedo is truly faster than that of a Pinz speedo?
