WTB - OD Canvas Bags for Chains
WTB - OD Canvas Bags for Chains
Does anyone have a source for the OD heavy canvas bags that the tire chains come in? My bags are getting old and weak (no comments please ) and I'd like to replace them.
I've looked at a few military surplus sites but no luck so far. I'm open to other ideas for storage - ammo cans maybe?

Re: WTB - OD Canvas Bags for Chains
Paul, FYI the bags my chains came with are black canvas. Ammo cans are OK as long as the chains are dry and oiled before closing the lid.

Re: WTB - OD Canvas Bags for Chains
The two bags my chains came in are made of a very tough black nylon with drawstrings, with painted white lettering indicating "245-16 S4 1Paar".

I am buying 100 yds of army green 18 oz canvas with with vinal coating that is used in industrial marine applications. If interested I can provide you with a couple yards to make your own.

Shawn, thanks for the offer. I will let you know.
crcpinz 's post reminded me of some cordura nylon bags I had so I'm going to give them a try.
Ed, ammo cans would be nice for ease of handling but I'd also be concerned about rust.
Thanks everyone!

Here's an option:
Heavy canvas bag, leather bottom with rope handle, 12" x 15"; (just dye it OD):

Re: WTB - OD Canvas Bags for Chains
Mine came with 2 chains each in sort of a coarse mesh loose woven greenish synthetic bag. I guess this is the Austrian version. You can see daylight clearly through the course material and I would imagine moisture drains right out. They've very tough bags probably 16" x 30" when flat, open on one end. Not sure where you'd get them but I'd think they would not be very expensive yet they show no signs of wear or tear. I think I might have seen feed or seed bags of similar material in ancient history.

Found these at Sportsmans Guide and decided to try them: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/u ... x?a=772953
Not as inexpensive as HF but they appear to be heavy duty. Weigh over 3 lbs. empty
Should be here by Friday.

Finally settled on these from Sportsman's Guide: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=1113382
On closeout for $16.99. Holds one pair of chains really nicely and is easy to handle. They look almost brand new.

Good that the strap goes around the bottom too. I put a set in an ammo can and I can barely lift it.

Re: WTB - OD Canvas Bags for Chains
Yes, the strap is what convinced me it would work. It goes underneath and back up to a buckle on the top so it completely encircles the bag. It's actually a very well made and sturdy bag. I think they'll hold up well. I was tempted to use an ammo can but like that the canvas can breath a bit.krick3tt wrote:Good that the strap goes around the bottom too.
