Going to try to make it. Wont be the same though...
Was there ever a consensus on what radio freq/channel people tuned into? I know they still list CB 4 but who has one anymore? (I do) But I can tune into FRS/GMRS/MURS 2meter/70cm these days.

I can do all the above bands and channels as well -- and more , heck it's a Radio truck after all.
IMHO it's pretty essential to have a reliable means of comm's when your wheeling.
Recently I have been wheeling with the "Madhatters4x4" club, located in Pleasanton CA.,
predominantly tricked out Jeeps and Bronco's -- I'm the odd duck.
They are VERY religious about comm's, and push and mentor members to at least get a HAM
Technicians License. They use the 2M band exclusively. Being on the trail with these guys a
number of times, comm's pays off! The key thing is to Standardize, pick a band, a freq and
STICK to it. For CB Ch-4 is pretty much a 4x4 club default. For 2M the Madhatters use
147.555 MhZ as their Simplex frequency as that freq is pretty clear of any known repeaters.
For GMRS it's channelized like CB, I use what is referred to as channel "550" as there are
not too many repeaters on that channel I have collided with, in fact there are not too many
GMRS repeaters in general. Channel "550" = 462.550 MhZ
So I would recommend the following:
CB, CH 4.
2M, 147.555 MhZ
GMRS, CH "550"
Incidentally, GMRS is a commercial band, typically used by "fleets", one can acquire a 5yr
license from the FCC $65 -- there is NO test. Then you can crank out 40W of power. This
band is close to the 70cm HAM band, at that freq it's pretty much line-of-sight comm's, but
I have never had a reach problem even up in the Sierra's with a lot of trees and valleys.

When Jim L was working on my truck years ago in Cali I tried to go but insurance and licensing got in the way!
Not sure I would survive a drive from Canada to Calico but its so tempting as its some of the best off-roading available and would be cool to put faces to Internet names
