Scottish Highlands

Post by ScottishPinz »

Took the truck north to the Highlands to see in the New Year.
Road was closed due to snow on the return so had a 100 mile detour to near Aberdeen to travel home on the east coast, then the Forth Bridge was closed because of storm force winds so had to detour to the west to cross the Forth!

Was it the A93 that was closed (snow gates between Braemar and Blairgowrie)?

I go to Glen Shee (on the A93) to visit some friends 2-3 times a year... Beautiful region. They drive Defenders up the glen and I always dream to take my Pinz up there, but it would be both expensive and time consuming. I might bite the bullet and ship it in a container at some point.

Scotland has been and is being hammered by weather... hope you're holding up well.

Yes the A93 from Braemar south! The next day they had opened the road south as far as the ski area. We had to detour a long way round. It would have been interesting to see if the pinzgauer would have got through had the gates not been closed. The snow blower that clears the road is a big beast of a machine, I hear it's a Canadian design. Scotland's not that far from Switzerland I'd suggest driving taking in the sights of France England and Wales on the way!

That's an option but so far I have not made up my mind about turning a one-week stay in Scotland into a 2-week Pinzgauer adventure (as I guess the trip would take at least 2 full days each way).
I also considered driving to Zeebrugge in Belgium and catching the ferry to Rosyth, now that they offer it again.

I had not realised that ferry was running again for non commercial traffic! Opens up some options for me :)

You must say hello if you do the trip as I'm a bike ride distance from rosyth

Norfolkline took it over from P&O... but as I wanted to check Norfolkline's website for a rough idea of the number of ferry sailing each week (Google took me directly to that very page yesterday)... I read that the line has been suspended again. Sorry for giving you false hope...

Lazy me, I usually fly in (thanks EasyJet for the cheap direct flights) when visiting Scotland... The friends I visit run the company Elite Falconry in Cluny, just out of Kirkcaldy.

Bizarrely enough I too had my 710K in Braemar on 31st and 1st Jan. Came back down early on 1st so missed any snow at Glen Shee.

If I had an improbability drive (obscure reference specific to men aged 35-42) I could have powered it for a month if we had met.

This was Linn of Quoich on the 31st. Not much snow sadly, and what there was was thawing rapidly.

:D Not to worry as long as you’re wearing peril sensitive sun glasses you’ll be blissfully unaware of the fleet’s approach.

Tony I can't believe I didn't see you, on the 31st - 1st was parked up on the road to Glen Quoich just by Marr Lodge! snow arrived the next night and we woke to an amazing winter wonderland and a beautiful sunrise.

We stayed the night of the 31st into the 1st up a track near Gairnshiel then drove back through Braemar on 1st mid morning. We left Glen Quoich maybe 4pm on the 31st en route to Gairnshiel. Must just have missed you.

I notice in the photos one of your rolls appears to have a giant toad on it. Is that part of some odd New Year tradition?

Tony

PS: I'm in the midst of having a set of Delrin rubbing bars made up to replace the painted wood ones on my Pinz, and have bought Delrin 35mm sheet enough for two sets, if you needed any.

I think our truck would have been parked at the linn of dee car park when you passed. We walked up to white bridge on new years day. My rub rails are ok just now thanks. Hope to meet and see your truck at some point.

The giant toad is in fact a very juicy beef burger from the BBQ :)
