Propane as Haflinger fuel

Post by Jim Molloy »

Hello to all,

We will soon be taking possession of our third incomplete Haflinger. Our goal is to get one complete and running vehicle out of the bunch. Looking at some of the photos shon in the discussion on using 14 and 15 inch tires, i realized we may have enough additional parts to make a rally/trials-type body on one of the two remaining chassis. This brought me to the question of propane power for the Haflinger. Does anyone know if this has this been tried before?

Several years ago, I converted an Unimog 404 with a 2.5 liter high compression engine to run solely on propane. It was an easy switch and produced ample power. The Impco 200 carburetor fit nicely in place of the original Zenith 32NDIX. The Haflinger would do well with a much smaller propane carburetor but could still use the same Impco throttle body.

I envision at least one pair of small propane tanks harvested for VW Westfalia campers placed under a new top platform (located toward the midline to be well out of harms way). We have four of those tanks waiting to be put to some good use right now. We also have a 500 gal propane tank with pump originally set up to fill the Unimog.

I would be interesed in hearing any thoughts on this matter.

Take care.

Dave says stay away from his forklift fuel or he'll have to use the forks :P
You could probably use a system set up for a VW bug(same carb base dimensions).
How about posting some pictures of your projects?
I just got my plates a few days ago and am almost ready for Calico Mogfest
Got all the fluid levels checked and the skid plates on today. New motor and repaired trans are working good 8)
Of course I will not be painting it quite yet as the mere look at "The green machine" instills the image of zombies . It sports the raised from the dead look

Jim,

Let Dave know his forklift fuel supply is not at risk from me. Our tank serves our needs quite well.

The two engines I will have use the Zenith NDIX as opposed to the Weber 32 ICS. I have a friend in Portland who is the local propane carburetion specialist for Suburban propane. I have no doubt we can put something together that will work well.

In our past conversions, we have considered retrofitting cylinder heads with new exhaust valves and hardened exhaust seats. Turns out the original MB parts are already hardened so that was not necessary. The same could not be said for the Volvo B30A engine in the C303 trucks. I am unsure if such seats are available for the Haflinger or will have to be machined de novo. Has the issue of running unleaded fuel in engines designed to operated with leaded fuel been discussed on this list?

Once the third truck arrives in two weeks, I will be taking plenty of photos. One of our trucks, our 1972 NA 700AP, looked very much like your Dawn of the Dead Haflinger. Could have been its evil twin until we gave it a quick shot of some gray primer.

Take care.

Dave,

It was the other Jim who initially brought you into the convesation. I just figured the two of you were discussing this issue behind the scenes. Glad you have joined in. Any thoughts on a Haflinger using LPG?

Your propane is safe. I have plesty of my own gas.

Take care.
