hopefully someone more knowledgeable about this will post, however a quick search indicates the chassis number is also stamped onto the right side of the gearbox housing.

You will find the Vehicle's Vin# stamped on the transmission detent plate(all models), the body itself is not stamped. ID plates if equipped are under or in front of passenger front seat. Some Poly cabs and all US models have an additional Fed ID vin tag on the dash plate(Lf side).

Haflingers actually have three "serial" numbers. The Fzg. Nr. (loosely translates to Fabrication Number) is the actual VIN and is only stamped on the data plate which resides in front of the RH front seat except for US Pathfinder models which also have this number on the dash mounted compliance plate. The Fahrgest Nr. (chassis number) is stamped in the gearbox as Jim stated in his message. Lastly, there is the Mot. Nr or motor number which is stamped in the right side of the motor case just below the oil dipstick tube. I've seen Haf's registered at various DoT jurisdictions with any of these numbers but using the Mot. Nr. or Fahrgest Nr. is a problem when either of these parts are replaced.

Steve

Simple way out if you have to swap transmission or engine. (or bodywork)

Get a new blank plate and stamp your current numbers on it. Then if you have to inform the powers that be of the changes.

Any "old" vehicle is going to suffer this problem of having major bits replaced at some point. As long as you keep any paper work relating to purchase / fitting of such parts, I can't see there being a big problem over it.

Dale at Haflinger technik has new blank tags. If you have a title(paper work) for the vehicle, just transfer numbers to new tag and rivet back in place.
Use the trans number for the vin or spend a few euros and contact Steyr for build sheet.

Numbers are 10mm like these http://www.ebay.com/itm/RDGTOOLS-BEST-Q ... 519d43626b

Must be Euro type

Hi gang,

I have the correct number stamps (custom made) as well as several variations of blank number plates which include US Pathfinder, Series 2 700AP, 703AP and 703APK types as each are unique.
