Haflinger Zenith Carby

Post by Garrycol »

My Haflinger has a Solex 34 PCI carby on it and I would like to change back to the original Zenith 32NDIX. The Haflinger specific versions are hard to find but Porsche, VW and Unimog 404 versions are available. I know what issues and modifications are required to use Porsche and VW versions but know nothing about the Unimog 404 version.

So can anyone tell me the difference between the Haflinger and Unimog Zenith 32NDIX carbs and what mods if any are needed to the Mog carb to use on a Haflinger.

Thanks

Haflinger version is closest to the Unimog type. Just change out the jets and venturi inserts.
Venturi 22mm, main jet sizes 95/100/105/110/115, idle jet 45, air correction jet 240, idle air jet 80, pump jet 40, starter jet 190, use the Unimog injection tubes(squirters/part#79 in parts book) as the special Haflinger ones are no longer available.
Easy conversion and uses a std Unimog rebuild kit and same pump length as Pinz, use lowest hole for pump rod.

For tropical regions below 1200 MSL the 115 would be best choice .

Thanks Jim - My home is 650m (2000Ft) and local mountains where I go are 1500m (5000Ft) but occasionally I am down on the coastal sand dunes. Temps range from 45°C (110F) in summer down to -8°C (17F) in winter.

I bought this item and paid for it but ebay has sent the shipping component to the US Global Shipping Program. The seller does not know anything about this and will not release the carby until he has received the shipping. In the listing there was mention of the Global Shipping Program being used. I have raised the issue with both Ebay and Paypal but I have not yet heard back from them.

Dealing with Ebay on a global basis can be easy or difficult. :(

Thanks - has been sorted - the seller was not aware that Ebay had put the requirement to use the Global Shipping Program in the listing and was not aware of its introduction.

Ebay US gets away with things that is not tolerated here in Aust. Some of Ebay's monopolistic policies with respect to the compulsory use of Paypal were banned by the authorities and thankfully they have not tried to introduce a Global Shipping Program here.

Yes it did and looks OK - I am waiting for a local carby expert to get back from holidays to discuss with him getting it rebuilt using the specifications provided by Jim in an earlier post.

I will also need to source a manifold as mine was modified to take the carby I currently have. I have the correct block that the carby bolts to and could get the pipes made etc to fit but am waiting for pricing for a complete manifold (I under stand they are expensive but not sure why) or just the pipes.

Cheers

This little project is becoming more difficult as no local carby experts are able to convert the Unimog carby to Haflinger specs as they cannot get jets. I have a couple of emails out to suppliers overseas with the jet specifications listed by Jim but have not received replies as yet.

However I am wondering why the Unimog 404 carb could not be used as is. Yes the engine in the Mog is much larger but it is individual cylinder volume that is the basic determinant of carb size.

The 2.2 litre Mog engine has a cylinder size of 366cc where my bored Haffie has a cylinder size of 381cc so on that basis the Mog carby should work no issues - however theory is often different to reality.

For information the Mog has 26mm Venturi, main jets are 140, idle jets 55, air correction 210, idle air jet 140, pump jet 55, starter jet 160.

Comments from those who know these things would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Haflinger Zenith Carby

An update and of course further issues :( .

I was not able to obtain the required jets in Aust and ended up buying a Haflinger jet block with jets and venturis installed. This went into a carby builder with the unimog carby to be rebuild - the builder used the haflinger jet block as a complete unit replacing the unimog one and refurbished the lot.

The engine seemed to run OK with the exception at idle when it would often stall when taking off from lights etc.

To do the final setup, the haflinger is in for its tuneup at a tuner shop also has a dyno. I just had a call saying the engine is running incredibly rich - so much so that that there would be enough fuel in the cylinders to wash the bores.

The refurb carb is supposedly fitted with the following jets:
Venturi 22mm, main jet sizes 110 (but taken out to 115), idle jet 45, air correction jet 240, idle air jet 80, pump jet 40, starter jet 190.

Given that all the jets are fixed except for the idle mixture there is something weird going on as mixture should be right.

Any ideas??

Thanks
