Considering buying a basket case I found

Post by Orangefj45 »

I own a 712 and have wanted a hafi for a long time. A buddy in TX just found this in a wrecking yard. I'm contemplating buying it even though it looks like it'll need EVERYTHING!!!!!

I know this is a vague question, but any idea what it would roughly cost to get this running?
$3k
$5k
?

Worth the effort?!

Thanks in advance!!!

You purchased the Warn Pinz?
That looks like a Pathfnder model - snap it up and save it!!
As for getting it running - hard to say without knowing about tranny and driveline.
Looks like motor is missing?

It's a Pathfinder.
Even if it's screwed up to the point of NOT saving it, any salvage value for usable parts might make it worth the purchase price.
Does the yard even know what this is? There have been wild price variations in basket-case Haflinger Pathfinders in the last 3 years. Something like $3000-$13000.

It appears there is a stripped Haflinger engine block located just in front of the tire in the back of the truck on the right side. one can see the four long cylinder/head studs projecting out over the right sideboard. You can also make out the offset loop of the oil dipstick. Behind the driver's seat in the load area appears to be a motor of some type. I suspect it is one of the Teledyne Model Number: 4A032-4.

The bigger brother is the 4A084-4

It is hard to place a value without knowing the condition of the transmission and other driveline components. Cost of bringing it back to full function also depends of what additional items are included in the sale. I would want to see a full set of photos including under the vehicle to assess degree of rust present. I would also want to look at the bell housing and input shaft. With the surplus engine present, it is possible that modifications have been made to transmission in anticipation of an engine swap.

Best wishes on the purchase.
Take care.

Figure a minimum of $15K to get it running and looking good. A Haflinger will suck up money like a boat if you want to do it right. Shortcuts save a little and usually end up costing more in the long run. I would not give over $2K as is, assuming a clear title.
Just getting the engine to run can top $4K in parts and labor!

Thanks for the input guys. It's a haflinger for sure. I do have a few more pics, could try to post them later.

Yes, I now own the warn Pinz.

Jim, I had a blast at your place last year, hope to make it again this year.

I'm waiting to hear back from the wrecking yard to see how much they're trying to get for it. I'm in northern CA and the Hafi is in east TX. But I'll be out that way in a couple of weeks at another offroad event and might just pick it up if the price is right and I can make all the logistics happen.

Could you guys tell me what the overall length is? Trying to figure out if it'll fit in the bed of my dodge; it's a shortbed.

Thanks again, I really appreciate it!!!!!!!

Here are more pics. The windshield frame is rotten thru, but I guess it's better than not having one. Engine and trans are there, but obviously need serious attention. I'm no expert by any means, but it looks like the main components are all there.

I would be willing to check this out or even pick it up and store it here at my shop until you arrive. I am also capable of rebuilding your windshield frame before you drag it home.

What off road event had you planned on attending here in E Texas?

Well it looks fairly complete - most of the bits and pieces seem to be there but most seem either broken or fallen/taken apart
Good:
- Pathfinder model (will add to the Pathfinder Facebook page and up the count :D by 1)
- Drive line seems intact
- engine block is visible (the other engine is not original and most likely will not fit)
- door frame(s)
- gas heater
- mirror stalks
- bumpers, stainless and rims seem ok
- rear seat frames
- nice rims :)

Bad:
- rest of engine, manifold, carb, dynastarter, etc?
- condition of driveline and tranny?
- missing rear view mirror and side mirrors (near impossible to locate)
- most indicator lights broken (harder to find these days)
- rust, rust, rust (you can see the windshield but you would need to look at the trouble areas like the front and rear footwells and the surrounding supports).

Most of the bad is just simple stuff like the lights - just depends if you want an original Pathfinder worth $15k when your done or a patched together run-about for the farm for $5k when your done (both assumes the engine is rebuildable and the tranny is good)
I guess - see what his price is and go from there!
Cheers,
Dan

The one in the foreground is not a Haflinger motor - yellow arrow shows part of Hafi engine block

My wife and I saw your truck parked on Teal Ct. (?) at Quail Lakes Dr. on Christmas Day 2014. We stopped to take a look - nice.

We asked one of the neighbors who was outside if they knew who owned it but they didn't, and being Christmas Day we didn't want to make ourselves a nuisance by knocking on doors. Maybe when we are back in Stockton this coming May??

This Hafi "2210" built 12/71 came off the line just a few after mine ("2192")!

I'm with Andre, what event is happening in East Texas? I know the Steel Soldiers rally is coming up in College Station but that is the only event I have heard about.

Hey guys.
First and foremost, thanks for all the replies, input and offers to help. I certainly appreciate it.
And to answer a few questions:
Yes, I live on Teal Court. Stop by anytime!!!! Even if you need a place to crash for the night .....
I'm not sure what the asking price is, but my buddy from TX who found it will stop by there again this weekend to find out. And he's offered to pick it up, store it and then deliver it to the event.
We will be attending the "LSLC Roundup" in Mason Tx in the middle of march. It's a Landcruiser event. I work in these vehicles for a living and have owned them for almos 25 years.
Here's a pic of my cruiser buggy on our home trail, the rubicon. Taken at old sluice. Not pinzgauer or haflinger friendly.....LOL.
