Front portal leak

Post by TechMOGogy » Mon Jun 08, 2015 1:55 pm

About to start restoring the running gear in the next week or so and found this leak on the front portal after its winter nap (was there before I put it away!)
Thoughts on repair!
I may need to clean it up some before I can tell exactly where the leak is coming from!
Thanks,
Dan

I had something similar and thought it was a leak in the hub but was actually a failed oil seal on the outboard end of the swing arm where the drive shaft joins to the CV.

You can see the oil seal in this pic. The diff oil drips out on to the hub making it look like it is leaking.

More than likely the mud deflector collar on which said seal runs will have some nice grooves in it. Either new replacement ($$$) or as Gary did, speedie sleeve (still $$), new oil seal and try to put the oil seal in a slightly different place. I.E. if the current oil seal is tapped all the way down to the stop, out the new one in with a mm gap at the back.

Most likely what it is as if it was just the hub I think I would be out of oil ie looks to have leaked a lot
Will be checking this weekend on diff level, hub level and a good clean so I can see what is what
Would be #4 below correct

Mine is doing the same thing right after I replaced all the relevant seals... That one being discussed is quite pricey, as far as seals go.
While you are at it, you might as well re-grease the CV joint.
I couldn't find a source for speedi-sleeves that was significantly cheaper than a new mud deflector collar from SAV. I ordered all the seals and collars there for both sides when I embarked on greasing the CV. Its such a complicated task for a simple procedure...

Item number 4 is the oil seal which is the most likely culprit. There is also a rubber "o" ring that is slid on to the drive shaft before you put he mud deflector shield on - stops the oil going down the splines and pouring out the same place just before the universal joint (Rezeppa joint in the manual).

Replacement of the mud deflector, "o" ring, oil seal requires you to open the brake system, remove both top and bottom swivel pins (king pins), in order to pull the whole hub assembly from the swing arm.

I found a speedie sleeve was a very cost effective way to fix the groove. The really expensive part was the special oil seal.

The leaking groove
