Maybe I lucky as I had spanners that fitted with no modifications to tools was needed.

It definitely helps to have multiple sets of wrenches/spanners so as to have extras for the purpose of modification.
My best example was cutting the open end off an 11mm one to be able to get at the top nut of the fuel pump. Put the cut bit on the nut, and putting a suitably sized closed-end wrench on the stub of its handle to use as a lever to undo the nut. Not sure how anyone gets at it without taking off the oil filler.
