718 Rebuild

Post by Profpinz »

I haven't really posted much about my 718 but like most Malaysian Pinzgauers it required a massive ammount of work to get it back to anything even resembling a running vehicle let alone fully rebuilding it (alongside a donor vehicle......this is all to do with Australian Compliance/Registration) like I am, and converting it from an M to a K.

I've pretty much completed most of the rear driveline (although I haven't completed the portal hubs etc) but some time ago I decided to concentrate on the platform/body as my panel beater/painter is threatening to sell-up/retire in the near future so I want to get it to him and completed before he does so and also as it will be at his place for quite a while I can finish the chassis etc whilst the body is been sprayed

Most of the panels are made, although at the moment nearly all are temporarily held in place with Clecos, Wedgelocks and Peanuts....I hope to have a big "Spot Welding" weekend in a month or so :D

Hail to the Pinzmaster! We be in the presence of greatness! I cannot even contemplate better work. Regarding your workshop, well, I better stop now before the drool gets into the keyboard.
We DEFINITELY need to be kept informed of your progress.

Holy...

There's a reason "professor" is in the title. Top notch work, like always. That will be one ultra nice 718K worth whatever price you want it to be.

Thanks guys for all the kind words, but it's a relatively easy/joyful task when ones passions encompass everything that is involved in the rebuild.....Pinzgauer's, workshops, tools & machines, metalwork etc, etc.
Some say I spend WAY TOO MUCH time in the workshop but I'm afflicted , a fanatic! :-) .....what can I say :-)
...........or as a friend of mine says, I'm "focused".

Now that the bulk of the panels are made, I have to finish many of the smaller "detailing" tasks before I start welding all the panels in place.
I also now have a replacement transfer case and I have cleaned and painted the case as well as purchased replacement bearings etc, so as soon as the body is ready to go to the painter I'll get onto it.

I'll post more pics etc as work progresses.

Wouldn't expect anything less from you, as always awesome job. What process did you use to make the side ribbed body panels, they look perfect.

G'Day Miles,
The information I got from you re the side panels was a great help and combined with measurements I took from a 718 that was temporarily imported into Australia for Military trials (it has since been exported out of the country...we ended up buying G Wagen's by the way) allowed me to 3D CAD a panel profile that was used to CNC fold several 1.0mm zinc seal sheets.
The sheets were then cut into the basic panel sizes required and each end cut for folding.
I made a simple press tool that I used to fold each of the end ridges individually.
After a bit of panel beating/"tickling", I welded up and ground the ends :D :)
You can see on the last pic that I still have to grind all the corners yet......over 100+ of them

TechMOGogy......All the parts have been zinc passivate plated.
The "goldy colour" is the final coating that is applied over the zinc plating to provide another level of protection.

Seriously amazing work!! I just wonder if a link to this thread from the "general" thread would be in order cause I don't often look at the TD stuff and this might have passed un-noticed.

Love reading restoration / build threads like this.

That's real nice work Peter. That axle case looks new.

I had to fit a new cylinder head on mine along with another one that came from Malaysia. I again used the AMC Head from a UK company good price. He has just shipped one out for Steve in Zambia. They only deal in VW diesels engines

So try him if you need one http://vwenginerecon.co.uk/

He also told me that head testing was a waste of time on these engines due to the fact that they normally crack in the valve seat area.

Wow amazing rebuild and I have also visited the "car Sales yard" this vehicle came from I know the condition it was probably on (not good). You are doing wonderful job I know how many hours you must have put in.

Reminds me of what I am going through with my Volvo C304 rebuild here in Malaysia 3 months left to finish on November 16. I spend a few hours each month visiting mine in the hospital and occassionally I get to to see the worker working on it and get to see his "care" and attention to detail.

I'm sure taking this vehicle to the various 4x4 clubs might open the eyes of the "japanese 4x4" guys to the capabilities etc of a PINZ most of whom have no idea what these vehicles can do offroad. THen again maybe not they do not even know what a portal is :)

I wish we could register them here but it proves lmost impossible unless you are EX - military here. THe cost of purchasing one here has become outrageous with costs of in excess of 70k being bandied about (12,000 pounds) just for one sitting in the yard before restore costs even start.

Peter,
Stunning work! This is the kind of quality I always imagine, but the reality as somewhat short of the mark - well in my world anyway...
Your world is inspiration to us all.
Keep up the exceptional work.
