After spending years with Lockheed and Boeing as a structural mechanic I thought I knew the names for most temporary fasteners however I need to ask, what's a peanut?
Very impressed with your progress and craftsmanship not to mention the great shop.

G'Day Ed,
Thanks for your comments.
At times, progress on the 718 seems slow, but then suddenly you pass a milestone and it all seems a lot better.....I'II be really happy when I get the platform fully welded
This a peanut!
At least that is what we call them here in Aus, but maybe you know them by another name.

G'Day Ian,
I've been busy welding the new panels in place, repairing the body damage and generally trying to finish the platform so I can continue construction and detailing of the upper body work.
As soon as I'm happy the upper body work is correct in size and fit, I'II send the platform off for media blasting and epoxy spraying.
I'II take some pics in the morning of the work to date and then post them.

Most of the main floorpan panels are now welded in place.
Keeping the panels as straight and free of distortion was a major concern.
The new ribs around the rear door entrance areas are now in place and the platform is as close to square and factory dimensions as is possible.
Magna Steyr / S Tec, didn't have left hand "box panels" available only the right, so I brought two, then disassembled one, modified it, then re-assembled/re-welded it as a left unit.
When I originally purchased the 718 the right footwell had damage I think from a forklift tine so I've spent the last three or four days bashing metal ........It's pretty good now and just needs a little "slapping".
Before Christmas I picked up the CNC formed under body ribs and the rear door shell.
It's a copy of the original design, but as the factory unit was stamped and I want the new unit to be an exact copy I drew up the CAD file so it would "accept" the four corner components I made on a metal shrinker.

Excellent work as always. When does the roof go on?
I was thinking of racing you to a roadworthy with my Volvo, but I somehow suspect that this is really a one horse race...

You're not lusting where I've already lusted!
And since I have lusted upon it, I'll talk about it in a new thread.
I don't want to take this thread any further off topic.
Peter has done some fantastic fabrication work to make a M platform into a K
and it needs to continue uninterrupted.
Cheers to you,

Peter,
I've no word to describe your task. The result will be in no way inferior to a brand new 718.
I do not know what kind of use you intend to do of your beast but, if you intend to carry passengers in the back, I would strongly recommend you to open an additional window between side doors, if you go for 3 seats on second row, and another one on rear side if you go for more jump seats on the back. I do not know if you had the opportunity to travel in the rear seats of any K Pinzgauer as it is a quite claustrophobic situation. In Australia you have wonderful landscapes and I'm sure your passenders would appreciate such upgrade.
I enclose a picture of a 716, allegedly a factory demo vehicle with such a feature. I'm doing something similar on my 716 k with 9 seats.

Just found your post and read through. As always your work is out of this world, well done. Can't wait to see it on the road and hope the 712 is not getting jealous!!;)

G'Day Gunipinzmutt ....sorry for my late reply!
Thanks for your post and the suggestion to add extra windows to relieve any claustrophobic feeling in the rear by passengers, but in actual fact I'm not really intending on carrying many people in the back, rather it will be seating for a camping setup which I will finish once the vehicle is registered (I'm only having two seats with a walkway between them)......The rear lift up sides are also part of my "setup"
BTW, the overall aim of the finished design is that externally my 718 will look totally factory "original".
Hopefully I'II post some pics of the latest work in the next month or so, after I get the platform back from the sandblaster.
Dion, I'm sure you'll get to see the 718 at some stage soon.
How did those hood bows work out?
