Re: A new EV SUV
Interesting and I knew it was coming someday soon but, yeah, how far can this go? And what do I do when I'm 90 miles deep into the Canyonlands with low charge? Where's the electric jerry can? How big do the solar panels have to be and how long do I need to set them up for to get out?
I bet EV West would have some insight.

Re: A new EV SUV
"Efficient" EVs use about 0.25 kWh (kilo watt hour, or 1,000 watts for an hour) per mile. I'd guess that the EV G takes about 0.5kWh or so; but unlike gas engines the use rate won't go up appreciatively at slow speeds and probably not much higher for off road, either. A big 2.5 x 5 foot solar panel is now about 300 watts; with full sun, you might get 1/4 to 1/2 mile additional range for each HOUR it is directly pointed into the sun. 90 miles away from civilization will require 180 - 360 hours of full sun from one panel! If you assume about 6 hours of "full" sun a day, plan on taking a month or two to get home with one panel. This is the reason why no EV manufacturer is touting solar panels for increased range - it is not hardly a drop in the bucket. How big do the solar panels have to be and how long do I need to set them up for to get out?

Yes - an interesting prototype but with only an 80 kWh battery and the weight and aerodynamics of a G-wagen the range would be about 100 miles or so at highway speeds.
The other overstatement is the battery charger - here is what it says:
"CHARGER: The 22 kW quick charger lets you fully charge the batteries within one hour, using a standard domestic mains socket."
22kW would require about 100 amps @ 240 VAC which is not available from and "standard domestic mains socket" other than from the kWh meter itself - perhaps that is what they meant...
Also - at a charging rate of 22 kW it would take about 4 hours to recharge an 80 kWh battery if it was from a very low state of charge.

You need a trailer with a gas generator on it.
