Very dangerous winch mount

Don't mean to pick on this owner, and to each his own and all of that, but this is just really dangerous. I hope he decides to go another route. Andre can build a plate fairly cheap and it's 100 times safer than this.

If the pull direction goes slightly off center, in any direction, this thing becomes not only a potential weapon but the destroyer of a Pinz front end.

That is just a normal portable winch mount freely available at many 4wd shops. I plugs into a standard 2" tow receiver tow bar and if used correctly as designed is quite safe though I do agree that it does not like it is being used as designed on that Pinz. Mount is supposed to be right up close to the receiver with little mount tube showing so the issue you raise concerning twisting sideways cannot happen.

Even if the base were close to the pin in the way you are talking about, when the pulling angle changes and goes up or down something is going to bend or break. Bad idea in all ways. It can't be stressed enough, this whole system or something similar is very likely hurt someone.

And THEE single most important issue here....it just doesn’t look all that nice. :)

But yeah, the potential for excess leverage on that pin mount is real.

I have something similar, but very different in design. It utilizes the entire space surrounding the pin, sitting fully in the pocket, making contact on 3 sides. A 2" receiver sticks out.

I had power to the front and rear of my 710, using those plastic quick disconnects from plow setups. I could move the winch to the front or rear depending on my situation.

I never used it once, but i was glad I had it just in case.

The winch is on the same mount as the picture, mounted to a 2" receiver on the front of my F250 diesel now. I've put it through hell on general farm work, pulling down trees, moving boats... Hasn't bent or let me down once.

Well...all the original pinzgauer winchmounts are mounted in the front pin Pocked mount and they use hydrolic winches or the warn 8274 types .

Now Warn sell them for their winches so I would say that they are safe if used as designed.

Now the fitment on the Pinz is not as they are deigned - that are not supposed to held in with just the pin as shown in the pic. They are designed to be inserted all the way up to the hilt in a 2" receiver that stops the winch mount moving from side to side. Quite safe and functional - re the comment they do not look good - well they are designed to be portable so as to be able to be moved from say the front of a vehicle to the rear or vice versa if 2" receivers are available at both ends. They are not designed to be just left in place.

I agree the arrangement on the pinz is not good but that is not what the mounts are designed for. Note that winch mount has been modified to take a vertical pin where as supplied the pin hole is horizontal so it goes into the 2" reliever and help in place with the horizontal pin.

Okay so the pic starting this post is copied from my post on some work being done to my pinz. Which pretty much means that you did mean to pick on the owner. But more to the point. Had anyone had simply directed a question to me rather than starting this thread, you would have learned that the picture was simply a shot the mechanic sent me to get an okay on general placement. And he did that using a generic mount. Which I think can pretty obviously not a permanent mounting set up.

Look I get it. You wanted to keep people safe. However, before making judgement on things and selecting someone to use as a bad example take the time to ask for the backstory. I greatly appreciate the help and direction I have recieved from a number of folks on the forum. But from time to time...

Here’s a another pic to keep you busy.

No judgement made on a person, just on the photo I saw and posted, and I stand behind what I said 100%. Good thing you are making is safer but for real recovery use, this is not a good set-up. Hopefully you won't be in situations where this will damage someone or your truck.

Also , this kind of set up greatly affects approach angle.

And to those people carrying these mounts in the back "for when you need them", keep in mind it becomes a 100lb metal dart that will kill anyone in it's path if you get in a wreck. Strap it down with heavy duty mounts.

Whoops! :// Sorry about this thread. I just remembered that I swore I'd stop commenting on bad winch mounts and practices. This same thing comes up yearly and I said it last time... pulling the zipper closed! :D

No offense intended. Bad day and have had a few poor experiences on forums lately. I apologize for being snitty.

By the way. Rather than using the winch for pulling the Pinzgauer I use it as a lifting device. I’m too old and fat to get into places I need a winch to get out of.
