An extinguisher for Christmas?!

Post by VinceAtReal4x4s »

This was a good reminder to have an extinguisher near by at all times! I saved this guy's truck yesterday after putting out the 5-6ft flames coming from his motor (not so much as a thank you from him :// ) and kept it from spreading quickly to the house near by with the high winds we're having. You never know when it'll happen and it doesn't have to be an antique car to suddenly go up! Merry Christmas!

Well done Vince!
It is a shame the truck owner did not recognize the value of the gift you gave him.
Take care.

In the Pinz, I have one mounted directly in front of the driver's seat. I've seen some mounted on the wire wall behind the front seats, but I felt like if the doghouse was on fire, it might be hard to access there.

Thanks Jim.

I like to mount them so I can grab it while standing outside the driver's door.

I carry one in my Pinzgauer behind the driver on the screen (the back side). I may need it one day, or I might come across a fire in someone else's vehicle, maybe after an accident.

On our TGB11, we have one in the front cab, one in the middle passenger area and one on the inside of the rear door. On the TGB1314A trucks, there is one in the front cab, one mounted to the inside of the side door and one on the rear wall next to the rear door.

We owned 1981 VW Vanagon Westfalia caper a few years ago and a friend gave us a BlazeCut fire suppression system. Very easy to install and we are thankful that it never had to be activated. I have considered investing in a couple ot those to mount in the engine compartments of each Volvo.

These seem like a decent investment given the enclosed nature of the Volvo engine access.

Take care.

I've added fire-sleeving to my Pinz fuel hoses as it's standard practice in aircraft, and I stick with the mechanical fuel pump to ensure if the engine isn't consuming fuel, it's not getting added to a fire. A fire in the doghouse would be tough to fight. That BlazceCut system looks nice -- how expensive?

The Blazecut system is nice stuff and proven pretty well. There's some youtube vids of it working. I think they run around $200 usually. They make different models. Very popular in the VW world.

I have about four extinguishers located at various points on my 710. Cheap protection

I think my count is up to about the same on my K. One aft, one in the pax compartment, a bottle and an element stick extinguisher in the cab.

40-50 year old vehicles are not to be completely trusted :) My Eberspächer is completely functional too, along with a PinzFDS - just sayin.

For an auto/4x4 environment you want a 2.5lb or bigger BC unit. Amerex makes good ones that are widely available and affordable. About $60 gets a decent sized one charged up with "Purple K" which is widely used.

Something is better than nothing though. A cheap ABC $28 version still works but there are disadvantages.

The Halotron ones are really nice but cost.

Even pricier still are the extinguishers from H3R Performance.
I have a pair of their 2.5 Lb MX250R's in the 710K. But went with
Amerex in the 712.

Fire extinguishers were one of the first pieces of equipment I
put in both trucks along with a complete First Aid kit -- perhaps
another tread on that topic but I like the kits from "My Medic",
although also pricey but the most complete kit I have found.
