Side Rail Replacement

I have a 710M and my side rails are looking a little worse for wear.

I am debating whether to try and find new wood ones, new rubber or metal, or sand down the ones I have a repaint them.

If anyone knows what the best way to handle this is, please let me know.

Also, any sources, prices would be appreciated.

I've been trying to figure out what to do with mine as well. I saw some B\A looking metal ones for sale on here before...... but I'd love to hear some different opinions and suggestions from people.

Sanded mine down with a mouse sander and then treated them to 3 coats of yacht varnish - dried rock hard and looks neat. I'll post some photos when I get a chance (pitch black and raining here at the moment).

Used 1 1/2'' metal channel, chamfer the leading and trailing ends.
Stand off from the frame with 1/8'' washers.

hard to beat these. I have had them on my 712 since '05 and on my 710 since I got it a few years ago.

I also did like krick3tt and used steel channel but used rubber grommets to stand off the body. The rails provide a good spot for stick-on reflectors.

All look good but I am usually a guy who keeps things stock.

Maybe I will sand mine down and see what they look like..

I too did what Paul and Moris did on my previous 710. It gets the attention of the cars that park next to you for sure. They can tell that they're the ones that need to pay attention before they go swinging their doors open!

I have a set of rubber ones in near new condition for sale if interested. If they were 712 size I would not be selling them.

Where can the metal channel be sourced? Does anyone sell pre-cut sets for the 710 or is it sold in lengths that have to be cut down?

If you go to a steel supply shop, you could walk in with the old wooden rail or simply note the length and width on what you need. They should have different profiles available. Pauls photos very clearly show the sort of shape you're looking for. You can paint it to match or contrast with your body (your truck's, not your's).

I'll tell you what, once I replaced my damaged wooden ones with steel replacements, any trees that saw me coming ALWAYS got out of the way quick because those steel rub rails probably looked pretty menacing!

I too used metal-3"x3/16" angle in an 8 ft. length. I chose the 8' length because it was easier for me to work with (vs.10' length). I cut the leading edge at a 45 degree angle and rounded the rear edge with a hand grinder. As I am not a purist, I 86'ed the nut-serts and had the rails welded on after filling in the holes for the nut-serts. Total cost including the welding (since I don't weld): $140

As if this wasn't obvious...that $hit is heavy so make sure you have enough mounting points (from the stock wodden rails) and consider having a friend alone to assist with this project.

I bet you could use extruded aluminum too as it would still be extremely durable. That would be easier to work with but perhaps more expensive. Check your sources.

I removed the wood ones, measured them and went to a metal shop and had them cut a stock 20 foot piece in two.
Took it home and did the chamfers with a hack saw (had no grinder then) very slow process...use a grinder. Matched the holes
from the wood and used the same stock screws with 1/8 washers to stand it off. I use the stand off to mount my tables for camping.
Cost about $40 for steel and $2 for washers. The cut was free. Gave them a few coats of paint and installed them. Started in the middle
and let the metal pivot for end line up...yeah they are heavy but not impossible. 'C' clamps help.
