I am not a Prepper, just curious.

Ya, and I just upgraded to a Civi setup too!edzz wrote:A Pinzgauer would have a much higher than the average chance of surviving a pulse when compared to a modern electronic infested vehicle. The most likely component to be damaged would be the aftermarket electronic ignition module. Doesn’t everyone carry a set of points just in case the back-up electronic ignition module in the Pinzgauers built in faraday cage (aka the tool box)?
Redirect it into my bunker!?! Are you crazy!!Middlebury_Pinz wrote:Just build a faraday cage in your garage and store it therethe cage absorbs this energy/ pulse and redirects it to ground.

I'd imagine there are coils in the injectors, alternator, starter motor etc.Dreadnought wrote:So we are saying that my Pinz with it,s old style Mercedes (non electronic) diesel engine conversion.....would be good to go??? (he he thought so) I have to admit that being worried about EMP was not on my list of 'why I should convert to diesel'.
Yeah, and don't forget about the Zombies, too. After an EMP blast I don't think there would be many places to drive my Pinz to
Doesn't knowing all this put you on a special list in the U.S. these days?Middlebury_Pinz wrote:An EMP is the by product of a nuclear detonation or the direct result of a unique weapon designed to produce an EMP to destroy infrastructure. It would take out anything with a winding like your coil, starter, alternator, ballast resistor for the ignition and anything else that can have an induced field.
If I'm not mistaken, the shielding on the ignition system was to prevent interference on any military radio that would have been installed in service?
All these spares represent a substantial investment. Just build a faraday cage in your garage and store it therethe cage absorbs this energy/ pulse and redirects it to ground.

I'm going to look at petrol/gas EFI first - have some cunning ideas that could make it a very attractive (cheap!) proposition but need to discuss it with some experts first. I would like a diesel engine but it looks like there's a lot of work to install one and it's beyond my skill set/budget. Perhaps I could bung a big diesel V8 in the back and have even more space in the cab!Dreadnought wrote:No coils in the injectors.....old style......if a diesel is running when the EMP hits...it just keeps on running......if the starter is gone...just bump start it. Seriously if you do consider a diesel conversion.....do take lots of measurements and choose a diesel with a cam chain (belts dont like deep water unless like a Landrover engine they are inside a sealed casing) or you could end up encroaching on your space in the cab.....which you have to admit is cramped enough as it is and one disadvantage is that it is difficult to turbo diesel a Pinz unless you can fabricate a remote position for the turbo.....and this is because turbos are usually situated just halfway up the side of the engine.....exactly where you or your passenger are sitting... and even behind some kind of a bulkhead and heat shield...you dont want a red hot turbo right next to you...do you????
