Hopefully none of the Pinz owners get caught up in this with some of the newer pinz out there my 87 should be safe.

Nothing new really. A couple years ago they crushed two Nissan Skylines that got smuggled into Wisconsin: http://autos.yahoo.com/blogs/motoramic/ ... 52761.html
Obviously, we have some pretty aggressive DOT/DMV employees working here too.

I wish the US would start putting diesels in all cars. The US petrol versions of trucks, suck!! I'd love a diesel land cruiser or 70 series with solid axle.

Re: what a shame
I own a couple diesels and couldn't agree more.
So we can't own a vehicle not designed for the roads? Why not buy a vehicle as a piece of art?
Was the mistake the attempted registration?

They forged/altered the VIN. Big non-no.audiocontr wrote:I own a couple diesels and couldn't agree more.

In the US, the U.S. Customs and U.S. DOT determine whether a vehicle is a "Motor Vehicle" (something designed to operate on-road) or not, at the time of importation.audiocontr wrote:So we can't own a vehicle not designed for the roads? Why not buy a vehicle as a piece of art?
If it's less than 25 years old and determined to be a Motor Vehicle (as was the Pinz), then it must comply with FMVSS in order to get a U.S. state title. That can be accomplished only through a Registered Importer (a company authorized by U.S./DOT to perform importations and FMVSS modifications), either via the NHTSA List of Nonconforming Vehicles Eligible for Importation http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/import/ or through actual modifications of the vehicle. Here is a NHTSA letter of interpretation that give some idea of the difficulty involved, although this is specifically about a motorcycle: http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/import/
If a Motor Vehicle cannot be brought into compliance with FMVSS requirements, then it is illegal to import it into the U.S. less than 25 years old.
If it is determined to be an off-road vehicle, then you can import it less than 25 years old. But that Land Rover would definitely be considered a Motor Vehicle.
Re: what a shame
They talk about soot spewing, and in the video dump a bunch of fuel and oil onto the ground when destroying that LR.
