Thermal Cooking an Epoch-Making Cooking Concept

So thermal cooking has been around for a while but the thermal cookers of today are more efficient compact and lighter than the home brewed fixtures.

Why I love Thermal Cooking? Huge fuel savings and freeing up time monitoring my meals as they cook. The closest equivalent I can make to thermal cooking is slow cooking in a crock pot.

My thermal cooker of choice is the Thermos Shuttle Chef 1.5Qt Travel Model.

Basically it is a Thermos with a fitted pot that sits into it with a tight fit and a compressing lid to keep the pot lid secure while moving about.

How it's used, Heat what your cooking to a boil, if it consists of smaller pieces just to a boil is fine, if larger pieces keep at a boil for 5 minutes to heat through.

Then put the whole pot into the thermal cooker and close. It will keep cooking just below boiling for up to 7 hours and it will keep the food warm for another 6 hours after that.

Cooking times will vary depending on what you are cooking and how you are cooking, but it is a easy learning curve. I really enjoy making soups from stock and slow cooking it all day while I'm out doing other things. I never have to worry about it burning my food or my place down.

I have only found the 1.5Qt cooker from one place in Canada http://www.forumappliances.com/thermos- ... -capacity/
It is the perfect size for 1 to 2 persons.

There are other sizes and manufactures. Thermos Shuttle Chef and Zojirushi are the best quality followed by Tiger brand as well.

I have done 80% of my cooking with this for over 3 years now and have seen huge fuel savings.

Miles, this is pretty interesting; I've never seen one, nor have I ever heard of this. Sounds like something that would be great for work! I have to travel for work in the fall and winter to very cold places at high altitudes usually for 10-15 hours a day. Cold sandwitches and coffee get pretty old. This would be perfect.

Does it have a recipe book?

Mine came with a small booklet of recipes but they were all Asian dishes which is fine if you have access to a good Asian market. But the web has many sites with recipes, here are some of the best:

Most of the recipes will be for the larger 4.5Qt models so if you use the smaller one like mine you'll have to adjust the recipes.

Hi guys,

Here is an Australian version that has taken off quite well. I haven't bought one yet but the wife would like one for our camping kit some time. The link will give you all the details: http://www.dreampot.com.au . :D
