Something to think about it

Post by VinceAtReal4x4s »

This kind of thing can happen all too easily, even without alcohol. Don't forget those belts.

From The L.A. Times:

A 25-year-old woman was killed Saturday when the Jeep in which she was riding went out of control on a steep hillside near Santa Clarita and rolled over as it plunged 1,500 feet to the bottom of a ravine, the California Highway Patrol said.

The woman, a Redlands resident, was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said Sunday in a news release. Her name was not released pending notification of family.

The driver, a 28-year-old Granada Hills resident, apparently was attempting to climb the hill when he lost control of the modified 1996 Jeep Cherokee, the CHP said.

The man, whose name has not been released, was thrown from the vehicle and suffered major injuries, the release said. He was placed under arrest and taken to Antelope Valley Hospital, according to the release.

"Alcohol appears to have been a contributing factor," the CHP said.

The accident occurred about 2 p.m. on Lookout Trail, north of Texas Canyon, in the Rowher Flats Off-Highway Vehicle area, a popular destination for off-road enthusiasts.

So, I'm not trying to be difficult, especially in light of the recent Etrac thread, but...

I've actually ridden with a friend who NEVER wore his seat belt off-road, in case he decided to jump from the vehicle as it rolled (Jeep w/ no doors). FWIW, I did wear belts with him. We never rolled. I'm not recommending against wearing belts.

What I'm curious about is this. The guy that survived was thrown clear, although he was admittedly hurt. The lady stayed in, but was killed. Was she wearing a belt? I tried to find out online, but never found the answer. Was she loose in the vehicle and just beat around, or was she secured and killed nonetheless?

Anybody know :?: :?:

1500 feet down - belt or not she would be dead - belts can only do so much as I am sure the vehicle was pretty crushed once it reached the bottom.
If you figure a perimeter of 25 feet for a Jeep that means it would have rolled over about 60 times

Take it from someone who specialized in vehicle rescue and was a fireman for almost 10 years- WEAR A BELT. The statistics are WAY in favor of wearing one and I've seen it many times.

There's always going to be exceptions but the cases where someone "jumped out" and lived or escaped an alleged car-fire are kind of like negative news-stories; people like to talk about it but they ignore to the other 1000 examples that day of good news, or in this case, people who lived while wearing a belt.

Yes thing always can go bad on the trail keep them from being more harmful vehicles can be repaired wear a safety belt. Also always keep your hands and arms in the vehicle and thumbs out of the steering wheel as limbs cannot be replaced very well or easily.

I've been the passenger in three jeeps that have rolled over. And seat belts saved my ass every time, one at 60 mph.

And now the "B" Pinz. Low speed tumpover, the only damage was to the front windshield.
